SLAM isn't one time. You have to test and raise Fc as frequently and often as you can. Especially so with your higher CC results
Yes, I realize it’s not a one time. It’s Shock Level (20 based on my CYA) and Maintain (at 7ppm), based on my current numbers. So I’m shocking to reduce CC and maintaining at 7, once I’ve reduced. Shocking is done at night, as I will this evening. I feel like I’m missing something based on your replies.
If I add more chlorine today to up the level to 20, would that not gas out? Should that not be done at night?

SLAM Process is SHOCK LEVEL MAINTAINED, meaning keep it at FC/20 all day/night (FC/20 is CYA/50 shock level), until no CC's, clear and no FC loss overnight. Not just raising FC overnight. (that makes it take longer)
It won't gas out, you have CYA that protects the FC from UV and allows it to "work" on the organics in the water. Raising FC only at night would be the safer choice ONLY if no CYA present and not available.

According to the Pool Math App, it’s as I stated, Shock Level and Maintain. I hate to be picky but, see my screenshot of the app.

while I agree to an extent that the buffer should help retain the chlorine, common advice that I’ve read here states to shock at night, which implies to me, and is stated in same threads, that chlorine will gas off during the day due to sunlight exposure, and my pool is in direct sunlight allday long.

Speaking of shock level, I’d love some clarification of the shock level. My inexperienced interpretation of this is to:
1. Shock the pool to the required level (in my case 20ppm based on my CYA level of 50) and
After reducing CC to >.5, as you rightly suggest
2. Maintain the target level of 7, based on the same

In my case, adding the Pool Math recommended amount of chlorine overnight (shock) (~1.3 gal) raised my FC only 2ppm overnight. I’m curious why it did not raise the level to shock level. Not even close to shock level.

as always, thank you for the valuable insights

**additional clarification of my pool volume as it’s likely to come up in this discussion, the volume of my pool, based on dimensions, is 12,500 gallons. However, my pool is filled to the tile line and actual water volume is closer to 11k gallons.

It's fine to be picky! Did you read the SLAM Process instructions? Screenshot of the "slam" part... Notice the second part of the first instruction, "Test and adjust (should say raise) chlorine levels as frequently as practical (from hourly and no less than twice a day). Chlorine additions should be frequent"

If you are more comfortable with only upping it at night, it's simply going to take longer to clear the water, since the FC is only being raised to "effective" once every day, instead of hourly/as needed to maintain FC/20 (for your pool levels).

Yes, I did a slam last night to raise FC, which it did but CC is still present and too hi. I will continue to slam tonight after sunset to lower CC and increase FC to shock level (20 per chart)

You want to test and raise your FC to SLAM level as often as possible. The more frequently you can boost it to your SLAM level and keep it close, the faster you'll reach the finish line. If you let it drop to low between test/addition you might be taking 2 steps forward 1 step back

Excellent points and thank you for raising them. I’ll continue the chlorine additions to achieve shock levels until CC is reduced.
I always appreciate the education from experienced people so many thanks for the help!
