Hi

I am a new pool owner and this is the first spring with the pool . It was filled last September. Until now I have had no issues with CYA being off. I have some questions and could use some education. I have a SWG that has now been on for the last several weeks as it has warmed up. I am in Central Texas and did not close or cover the pool for winter. Over the last few weeks I noticed the CYA drifting lower and today it was at 30 and my FC was 6.5 . I know I need to bring my CYA up and have some questions.

1. What is the difference between the liquid form and the crystals and which type is the best to use and why ?
2. I noticed when reviewing some info online there are a few ways people choose to add it to the pool . What is the best method and why ?
3. I would like to understand what causes CYA numbers to go down . Over winter and early March we have had a lot of wind so water has been added to the pool , also some heavy rains which caused me to let some water out of the pool and I have backwashed recently . Not sure if this could cause the number to drift down ?

Early on during startup before we added salt I used tabs that had stabilizer in them but as soon was appropriate I switched over to salt . Over the winter when the SWG was off due to temps I used tabs when needed.

4. Now that I am only using SWG is CYA something that needs to be added often or should it hold once I get the level up ?

As always grateful for the help from this forum !

Jen

Lots of great information in the article above.
1. Liquid is about 4X as expensive. Best to use the granular CYA. Use a thin sock and put it in the skimmer or hang in front of a return.
2. see above
3. "also some heavy rains which caused me to let some water out of the pool and I have backwashed recently" That is the primary way you lose CYA. CYA will also slowly degrade. Faster in water above 80F.
4. Test your CYA monthly, or any time you have had to drain a significant amount of water from the pool.
