I have an in ground pool with a coverstar automatic cover. Is there a general rule for displacement of water? I close my pool first week of October and lost 2-3 inches. So sites talk about displacement/evaporation and leaks. Liner in new this year (not that it can’t be the liner). Looking for some guidance. Live in Northern Illinois

Thanks you

Welcome to TFP Joe.

There should be no evaporation with the pool covered.

Keep an eye on your water level and see if it drops further. The level the water stabilizes at indicates where the leak usually is.

Are you using the Coverstar cover for the winter? If so the automatic cover cannot support snow loads without the support of the water below. Having a low water level can damage the cover during the winter. Some people do not use their expensive automatic cover for the winter and replace it with a winter cover.

Let us know what happens with your water level.

I will keep an eye on it.

There is a small opening in the cover (the tracks are on top of the concrete). There is a bar and maybe an 2 inch gap at end of gap. Can there be evaporation then? See picture attached

One last question in reading more….is there a general rule of thumb on water displacement? Example is 2 inches of water on top how much will be displaced?

That is not enough surface area to have significant evaporation.

The water displaced needs to go somewhere. It will not disappear.

2 inches of water on top of the cover will raise the water level, not lower it.

Do you have an overflow drain on your pool?

Let me rephrase my question…if there is 2 inches of water pushing down on the cover, will water overflow in the pool?

Where would the water overflow to?

What is the gap between the water level and the top of the coping?
