Unfortunately the area i live in has no "Pool Sand" or Filter balls readily available till monday(Small west texas towns). I know I may seem like I am in a bit of a rush but is there an alternative for sand? if not should i even bother setting it up till I get some?

Check your manual but most sand filters need #20 sand. There is a Home Depot in Midland. I bet they have it.
I suggest you read ABC's of Pool Water Chemistry and consider reviewing the entire Pool School eBook.

Filter Balls are NOT an alternative to sand....or even a supplement. Get #20 pool sand.....nothing else - regardless of how long you have to wait

Set up the pool and start filling. Unless it's a really small pool, it will take a lot longer than you think it will to fill with a hose. It won't turn green and gooey in a day. You can even run the pump and filter without sand. It won;t filter at all, but it will circulate the water so you can start balancing.
