I’ve read through a lot of your threads about chlorine lock and losing chlorine. I just ordered the $83 test kit so it should be here Monday or Tuesday. My Inground pool liner was replaced five years ago and they sell the borate system from “clear results”. I’ve had great luck with that every year since with not having algae issues. It is pucks and shock and they installed a dispenser. We moved into this house 18 years ago and we’ve been pretty good at Keeping the pool clean and sanitized. This is Western New York and we try to swim from Memorial Day till late September. Mostly myself and my chocolate lab.
Every other year at opening, I have chlorine lock. I’ve read that it’s not real but usually 8 to 10 gallons of chlorine help. This year I am not having success solving that. I have no trees however the Neighbor’s giant silver maple is constantly dropping helicopters into my pool this time of year-filling the skimmer at least twice a days.
I already received my yearly seasonal supply of Clear Results. And it isn’t cheap. I actually complain to them frequently during the season that I don’t get chlorine readings on the test strips and they say that is normal as long as the pucks are dissolving you’re getting chlorine.
Before I go any farther, I noticed that everyone says don’t use pucks- and I understand that now, but I’ve already spent the money on it for this season. Maybe I can change next year but is there any advice from you guys if I still want to use the pucks that I have for the season as it was over $400.
I already buy baking soda from the hardware store, I do have bags of PH up. I see there’s a hardware store equivalent that I can buy instead of that for future.. i’m using test results strips and going to the pool store and I will stop that in the future when my kit comes.
Has anyone used clear results with borate? And can actually help with the chlorine block.
Took off safety cover on May7th. Black and dirty but Clear in 3 days with the 12 gallons of chlorine. Pump tons 24/7. 2 weeks ago I added Shock and 10-12 gallons of chlorine. Probably another 8 last week and drained about 8 hours of water with sump pump and added from the hose. Yesterday I did 8 gallons of chlorine and four bags of shock. And maybe just a sparkle of reading on the free chlorine on the test strip this morning. Test strip! I know. I’m working on it! I ordered the kit! I really wanted to swim by Memorial Day as I am on vacation. And I took short cuts. PH and alk good. Added calcium last week . 3 bottles of phosphate remover 1st week. Metal remover.

Please don’t chastise me, for going to the pool store. I’m an 58 year old lady and I actually have anxiety about using my own test kit….lol. But I read a lot and search for thinks on line because I know they are only getting money from us in the summer and they will sell us whatever they can. In chlorine jugs aren’t cheap anymore like they were before Covid so that’s kind of a pain in the butt too.

There’s no such thing as chlorine lock. There is something called too much CYA which is not sustainable in keeping enough chlorine to keep the pool sanitary.
