My pool was contaminated. CC were 5 times (not 0.5) more than FC. Shocking with 14 lb of dichlor, with TA at merely 78, raised CyA too high and lowered TA and pH too much. CyA is currenly at 78, pH at 6.8, TA at 40 (10 lb of soda already in yesterday) FC is still low but the difference is now less too. partially draining and refilling.

Welcome to TFP! Please tell us what test kit you are using and post a full set of water test results as follows:

FC
CC
CYA
PH
TA
CH

Also be sure to update your signature. It helps with responses.

drained about 20% of the pool water and refilled. added 10 oz of soda ash and 1lb of cal hypo at dusk in anticipation of overnight rain. end result today:

Happy about decreased CyA (my target is 60) and decreased difference in chlorine levels (used to be .9 to 5) . today at noon added 15 lb of baking soda to raise TA, which should bump up my pH. In 4 hrs will add 2 lb of cal hypo to shoot for FC of 8-9

Also please tell us more about the contamination…
:epds:
there was a big fat elkhorn that dogs dropped in the pool last fall. the pool got winterized with it in the water. the pool got opened and the bacteria infested thing was not removed. to top it off, since the pool was blueish and I expected cloudness to dissipate any day, I heated water to about 95 degrees. Chlorine was no match for the protein rich soup I was creating. the cloudiness did dissipate about memorial day and I removed the elkhorn.

I’ve heard of alot of weird stuff falling in the pool but this is a definite first for that one!
We recommend using liquid chlorine and performing the SLAM Process to clear up issues such as yours.
Attempting to do this with cal hypo presents 2 problems- adding unnecessary calcium (too much causes scale)
& large doses of cal hypo can cause cloudiness which further complicates matters.

You will need the ability to test with your own kit to properly slam the pool and follow the protocols recommended here- a Taylor k2006c or tf100/pro

Until you get one in you can simply add 5ppm worth of liquid chlorine each day to keep things from getting worse .

Another note- that TA value is your adjusted TA. (There’s an * at the bottom that denotes this)
It is fine & no need for baking soda so long as your ACTUAL TA is 50 or above.

Thanks for the TA tip!
Also, TF Pro is ordered and was on its way on 5/29. I included SLAM option with it.
I am noticing my FC does not stick. Will try the liquid chlorine and SLAM. Would it be harmful to use 7.73% household Chlorox bleach (buy at SAM’s in gallon jugs)?

Don't use chlorox! Has chloromax tech, which is polymers. No bueno for el poolo. Stick with Walmart Pool Essentials Liquid Chlorine.
