New to pools; Water milky white, cloudy; with Iron

Let it ride! Don’t make it worth the hassle to change it if you don’t have to.

I changed mine every 2 days or so - but I had a hellacious amount of rust. My pool was almost black/brown when I started. You’re on about day 6-7 of my filtration days, after 2 days of filtering!

And you can see the bottom! That’s the best way to see progress! One morning you’ll wake up… dread going to see the pool… and almost be brought to tears because it’s BERMUDA BLUE!!! Okay… maybe that was just me 🤣🤣

Good morning TFP friends,

Hope all is well. I'm really happy with the results I'm seeing (see attached). The photos don't really do it justice but I'm noticing the green is fading fast and I'm sure there's a hint of blue in there, lol. I'll keep you guys posted. I'm really hoping it's ready before next week Thursday 🤞🏽. Thanks for all your help guys.

Also, I don't seem to be losing any overnight chlorine (had 16.5ppm this morning after adding from the 13ppm I had when I returned from the city yesterday. It also rained a lot overnight). CYA remains 40 and I'll have to check combined chlorine in a few hours. PH was really high so I added sodium bisulfate (supposed to add 3 but added 1.5 and I'll add the next after 2 hrs). Hope that's ok! Pool remains a bit cloudy but it's getting so much better!

Jenn! I will definitely cry for joy when I see it! I'm sure my daughter will too!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I'll keep you guys posted!

Wooooohhhhoooooo!! Look at that progress!!

I’d go ahead and change the Poly and toss what’s in the bucket right into the trash - it probably won’t be salvageable.

Word of advice - if you plan to backwash and/rinse - make sure your bucket is elevated so it does NOT dump back into the pool. I’d also make sure when you take your bucket down to be super mindful of how full it is - that will surprise you!

Don’t freak out when you reconnect - even with clean poly - that some rust ends up back in the pool. All normal! It will cycle out!

Keep moving forward with SLAM too! I think you’ll be clear by Monday/Tuesday!

Awwww yeaaaahhhh!!!! It’s all working!!!

Woo Hoo Season 5 GIF by Friends

What kinda stains?

For Rust - get some vitamin c (yes from the grocery store) tablets (not gel caps) and crush those up in a sock and rub on the stains. Might take a time or two to get it all to lift

All of us are always glad to help! Trust me, the guidance and support here is like nothing else!

There are three criteria you must pass to be out of SLAM - and you have to pass all 3 at the same time:
1. Crystal clear water
2. Pass OCLT
3. CC of 0.5 or Lower

Only then can you begin to let your FC fall into maintenance range. If you start to fall, and notice anything change with the appearance of water, back to SLAM you go!

Believe it or not @Texas Splash and @PoolStored got me through my very first opening this summer. Learned a TON of information and have been incredibly thankful for both of them.

I put them through the wringer with my woes, and they both were encouraging, supportive and great at keeping me sane! I owe them every ounce of crystal clear water!

That is awesome! I'll def be looking into all that. I have passed FC, CC,, and clearing up nicely. Ima give it till Wednesday for good measure since I put in the ladder. I cleaned every nook and cranny the best I can but I'd like to be entirely sure I'm in the clear before I let it go down to maintenance level 🤣. Attached is the worse photo my wife took of me cleaning the pool lolol.

@GtrMan128, I hope you don't mind, I took the liberty of modifying your thread title just a bit to highlight your experience with iron. Just like @JessBlount617 and her experiences, your thread will be valuable to many others. I selected it as one to watch for future reference. Water looks fantastic.

Great job! :goodjob:

Hey! No problem! I'm glad it could help someone! Thanks so much! This is my go to for iron removal in the future!!!!!!! 😁

FYI: I'll keep you guys updated since the pool got cloudy after adding chlorine again (just now) 😵‍💫. We did have a lot of rain today so I'll update you tomorrow morning on the condition.

It seems to have diluted the chlorine and it went down to 8ppm so I had to add a gallon and a quart to go back up to 16. I could still see the pool floor. I'll keep you guys updated!

@JessBlount617 @Texas Splash

😭😭 hey guys. Woke up this morning. Pool didn't clear after the last SLAM 😭😭. It rained yesterday but the pool was clear. When I raised it from 8ppm to 16ppm it clouded up. I cleaned the cartridge filter, changed the polyfill (some rust went into the pool so I changed the polyfil as well and thank goodness no color change). It rained last night again so I couldn't tell you whether it cleared then got cloudy again ☹️ but photos are attached.

Here are my findings:
FC: 17.5ppm (didn't add any more since the last SLAM)
CC: 0.4ppm
PH: 8.0
AK: 110
CH: 300
Cya:30

I put a cup of liquid stablizer to go back up to 40 as per pool math. Everything else was fine. PH I didn't want to touch yet as I know rain can add to it. What do you guys think 😢?

No problem. You got this! Continue with the SLAM FC level. It might aggravate the iron which in your case is fine because you are still filtering. The more you remove now the better anyway. The chlorine will kill whatever caused your water to get cloudy. Normally a rain by itself doesn't impact TFP water so much, but odd things happen. Stick with it and you'll bounce back in no time. I'm sure of it. You have the tools and knowledge now to take care of it. :goodjob:
