New To Pool Testing and FC Issues- Marietta, GA

Growing frustrated and feel like im not going to be able to do this process on my own.. As of 7:30 AM (pump not running) these are my numbers:

FC 16
PH 7.6
TA 160
CH 160
CYA 100 (HIGH)
SALT 3200

Pool looks great- crystal clear- no visible issues. New cell has been running at 65% for 12 hours (8am-8pm)

For the first time in weeks, we have no rain and full sun has been on the pool for the last 2 days... Please help

What is the issue? Have you added any products to raise your CYA?

Nope

I think maybe my CYA has been higher than i thought ... did both the diluted method and regular method this morning and they both came to 100... I drained down to below the skimmer just now and refilling with some fresh water, then will test again. Pump running with SWG at 50%

So your water is clear and your FC looks good.

You know the CYA is high but first I would complete the Overnight chlorine loss test

So place the swg at 0% for the rest of the day test the FC tonight after the sun goes down and test prior to sun hitting the pool in the morning. FC shouldn’t drop more than .5ppm. If you pass this I’d let your FC get to between 8-10 and then turn the cell back on using the calculator to maintain 2ppm per day.

You can then tackle the CYA and try to get it to 70-80.

Sounds great! Thank you!

OK- Tested this last night at 8:00 PM after SWG had been turned off for about 5 hours:

FC 14.5
CC 0.0
PH 7.6
CYA 90

This morning at 6:40 AM, pump and SWG had been off all night:

FC 13.5
CC 0.0
PH 7.6
CYA 90

Overnight Loss of 1 ppm... I read that no need to SLAM if 1ppm or less.. Are you suggesting, I still need to SLAM? I was planning on letting FC drop a bit more, then turn the SWG back on when FC gets to between 8-10 , as you suggested.

Thank you

Looks like you passed the overnight test, the water is clear I would say you are all good. When your FC drops to 12 I would turn the SWG back on. You are well below SLAM levels so perfectly safe to swim. Make sure you don’t add anything that will raise the CYA as you are at the upper limit. It will slowly drop over time this summer as you have to add water. Also you could still drain some water if you want to lower it quicker. Just don’t let FC ever drop below 7 now. Target 10-12 for that CYA level of 90.

thank you for your help! I feel pretty good with eveything and I just turned SWG on and will monitor the % and time from this point- did use the calculator so hopefully that will help ;)

Your welcome and happy swimming. Once you get that SWG dialed in just use the pool math to help you add the correct dosage of MA (muriatic Acid) to lower your PH each time as it will creep up over time.

Quick update:

TA is still not going down.. Been sitting at 160 for days even after adding MA 3 times now... Any advice? PH ranges from 7.6 - 7.8 depending on the time of day when i test.

FC seems to be going up daily... Still trying to get the hang go the new cell and the SWG %.. Tonight FC was 17.5 - CYA is 80.

Should I be concerned about any of these numbers?

Thanks, as always!

You can turn off the SWG for a day or so. You aren’t at SLAM level yet, but you are way higher than you need to be!

When you add MA, what PH are you shooting for?

If you test a few minutes after the add, do you get to 7.2? Wondering if your volume calculation is off.

Yep, it does. Pool Math is guessing 23,000 gallons. Try that with your next addition of MA and see if that gets you closer to expected results.
