New SWG System Recommendations

So it appears my system may need to be replaced due to the controller no longer being manufactured. Any recommendations for the best system to buy that will most easily work with my existing setup? I would like to be able to use the A5 cell since I now have 2 in good condition that are not usable.

Call InyoPools and see what they recommend. I assume the manufacturer of the salt cell does not also have a controller?

Take care.

I have a similar question - I don't have a SWG yet, starting the shopping and decision process and don't want to end up in the position of the OP. While technology is evolving and all things are fluid, what brand/model SWG is most likely to have continued support and parts? Price today means nothing if, when the time comes, parts are not available and I am forced to replace the entire system because a control board or cell is not available.

Along those same lines, are all Salt Cells the same or similar in size? I am thinking in terms of what happens when the time comes and I do have to replace the entire system. A controller is one thing, but a cell that requires a major reroute of the plumbing is another. And for those that have installed yourself, or changed your own cells, etc, which is better/easier to work with - a cell that is linear or one that diverts the water 90 degrees? I can see the ones that divert being easier to change the cell, but does the diversion slow water flow? Is this good or bad?

Local Pool Supply has the Hayward AquaRite 940. I looked and it appears to be identical to the AquaRite15 in every respect except price and warranty. Anyone verified that fact? I asked the pool store, the clerk said they did carry both but for them, the sale price was only $25 difference for the extra year warranty so they now carry only the 940. He said "probably different cell, but same controller".

A quick search via Madam Google indicates Hayward made the 900 series for "Brick & Mortar" stores only, not available on-line. So my question is whether the extra $300 in cost is really worth it to get 1 additional year of warranty. If they are identical, only marketing/warranty and price set them apart, I would be better off putting those 3 Benjamins in a safe place to offset the cost of my first replacement cell and bet on the first one making 4 years anyway. But, if the 940 (rated for 40K) is really better than the T-15 (also rated for 40K) then what is the difference and it is worth it.

FYI - the package the 940 comes in has a vague comparison of the 940 vs. the T15 that would lead the average consumer to believe the 940 will produce more chlorine - I should have snapped a photo but I think it said the 940 - 40K cell will produce 750 pound of chlorine and the T15 - 40K cell will produce 560 pounds of chlorine. . Wouldn't a cell that is rated for 40K produce the same pound of Chlorine per year as another cell rated for 40K at the same setting? Also, I note that 560 divided by three years (the warranty period) and 750 divided by 4 years warranty are pretty close to the same result which makes me think this is "marketing hype".

Hayward has this marketing method of showing their SWCG chlorine production in pounds of TriChlor over the life of the cell. What is that?!?? You need to know what the 'life of the cell' is to figure out its daily chlorine production.

Pentair up front says the IC40 produces 1.4# of chlorine a day. So I assume Hawards 40K cell does too -- but it still is a bit of a guess.

I assume the 'pool store' would have to install the SWCG to get the warranty --

Good luck.

The 940 and T-15 are the same systems only the cells are rated for a different amount of chlorine over their life spans as you noted. The 940 cells will have a thicker amount of plating on the plates that will last longer than the T-15 cells. Both of these cells can produce 1.47lbs of chlorine gas in a day, but the 940 cells will last longer due to the thicker plating.

It's up to you to compare the cost difference if one makes more sense than the other.

You might check with the store and see which cell they give if the first cell dies under warranty. I know that T-15 cells that were bought over the net are replaced with one year GLX cells, but the original 3 warranty still applies. If you buy in store their cell replacement policy might be different.
