New start and run capacitors, but pump motor still fails to start every few days

Hi,

I was gifted an older spa pool that "would no longer heat." I found that the main 2-speed pump will work fine for a few days, and then it fails to start (only a low hum). The controller automatically switches off the pump and heater when it enters sleep mode at 11pm, and then on again at 7am. When the pump fails to start there's no water circulating so the heater overheats and the controller goes into an 06 error status, where it stays until things have cooled down and the system is powered off and on again. It'll work fine for a few days, and then fail again.

I suspected a faulty capacitor, so I replaced the obvious one in the separate housing on top of the motor, (which turns out to be the run capacitor), but that didn't solve the problem. I then found a second capacitor (the start capacitor), under the end cap of the motor and replaced that one as well. Everything then worked fine for a few days, only to find another 06 (overheating) error on the display this morning. I turned the power off and back on again, only to hear the hum of power to the motor but it failing to start. I didn't have time to investigate immediately, so I left the power off all day and then turned it on again this evening and everything is working fine again.

The shaft spins freely, and the bearings appear to be fine. I've installed new filters and there's plenty of water pressure when it's running normally, so that would seem to rule out any blockages .

Any ideas as to what might be causing this intermittent pump motor start-up failure?
Before pulling it out again, is there any point looking for a possibly sticky centrifugal switch? If that's the issue, wouldn't it be constant?

Pump: Maxi-Flow 2.5ph 2-speed
Controller: Spa-Quip Spa Power 750

Given you have changed the start capacitor then I agree the centrifugal switch could be the cause. If it is (intermittently) stuck open then the symptoms would be the same as for a failed start capacitor (inability to start, humming etc)

You could also retest both the old and new start capacitor as there may be an underlying fault causing it to operate incorrectly.
