New Pool Setup

I’ve been using your recommendation and going to 9 ppm to end up at 6ppm by the end of the day but should I go higher to 10 or 11 you think? Cya is currently 60
It changes as the season warms up, then warms back down. It may have already changed for you because Texas. :ROFLMAO:

The key is to take your recent loss, and cover that *plus* a reasonable amount of wiggle room, to remain free and clear away from minimum FC at the low point in your swing.

+4 ppm may be a week-long dose in March or October. It may be a 6 hour dose in July. :)

Might play it safe then a go with 10 with daily testing and increase as needed.
The Ph test is invalid at 10+ FC so test before you dose back to 10(ish).

Look at the chart above. Specifically all the room above target level to SLAM, which is safe for swimmers and equipment thanks to the CYA.

Now look at the little room between low target and minimum.

Play around on the high side, never on the low side, and we will *never* discuss your swamp. (y)

Had to refill our pool for the first time since water level got low from splash out & evaporation. I was having an issue with the pump not fully priming and gurgling sounds from the return jets.

After refilling I did a full test. Is that that the best practice after topping off with more water? My CYA dropped from 60 to 50 so I’ll need to get that back up.

Mix well first.

Do you traditionally need it that high for the peak season ? We're still a bit early but you also live in TX, so. :ROFLMAO:

Target FC at 8-9 ppm and you should be good. I like to run FC a bit high for insurance.

Testing nightly is fine.

We had a huge storm that came through which almost filled my pool up. I've noticed I started using a ton more chlorine daily, which I thought was due to the increase temps we have been having in in Central TX. Water is still clear.

Last night 2 nights ago I added 49oz to get from 6.5 to 11 and then last night added 63oz to get back to 11. This morning I decided to test again and FC was 9. Unfortunately I should have tested again last night after I added the 63oz correct? So I do not know what my true FC level was after I added the 63 oz.

Also decided to test CYA in the daylight. Generally Ive done it in my bathroom in controlled lighting however I was surprised to see my CYA had decreased from the rain water to 40.

What are my steps I should go through? Should I slam now or redo the test this evening to confirm tomorrow whether I have an issue? then slam and raise CYA at the same time?

I think you should redo the Overnight Chlorine Loss Test unless you see visible signs of algae.

Don't increase CYA until you complete the OCLT. Higher CYA levels would require more chlorine during the SLAM.

I added and retested tonight. Poolmath suggested I add 42oz to go from 8 to 11. I waited for 1hr with pump running then retested and FC was 10.

Is this normal for a slight variance between poolmath suggestion vs actual?

Will report back tomorrow morning after I retest.

Are you fairly certain about the volume of your pool? Are you getting expected results from other chemicals? Make sure the percentage of the bleach you're using matches the selection in pool math.

You may be using an older batch of liquid chlorine. You can see how old your batch is by looking for the Julian date on the package or bottle. Look for a five-digit code with the first two being the year and the last three being that years sequential day of production.

I reached out to the manufacturer & Aviva pools estimated 11025 gallons. So that is already another variable.

That was the first time I tested after adding so I’ve never confirmed if other chemicals were off as well.

Will check the bottles I ordered from Walmart to confirm date code. Thx for the link.

Trying to calculate pool volume manually and I think the 11025 gals is way low?

Using the old poolmath web calculator
Sun deck 15.5ft x 7ft x 1.25 ft deep = 1000 gal
Main: 15.5ft x 23ft x 5.25ft deep avg (4.5+6/2) = 14000

Total 15,000 gals

That's a significant difference, about 36% more volume than the manufacturer's estimate. Could they be that far off?? Assuming your measurements are correct and your accounting for the depth of the actual water level, your numbers look good.

I'm no math wiz, but that's consistent with your expected FC change (3ppm) and actual FC change (2 ppm).

Had a panic moment last night. Accidentally forgot to turn off the water when I was filling back up my pool water level and came home after celebrating Jul 4 to my pool overflowing (face palm)

Was able to drain the pool to get it to the top of the skimmer. It’s till higher than Ive had but figured evaporation will take care of the rest.

I tested this morning:
FC: 2.5
CYA: dropped to 40

So I went ahead & added chlorine to slam level 16 ppm just to be safe. Was that right to do or should I have just added it back to regular level? I’ll plan to do an OCLT tonight after work.
