New Pool Pump

Hello All - first time poster - thank you for your help ( I live just north of DFW airport ).

I have a 10,000 gal. inground gunite play pool. I replaced the original Hayward 2 HP NorthStar pump in September 2017 with a new Hayward 2 HP Super Pump. It looks like a pinhole leak has developed in a small vertical seam on the pump strainer housing (SPX1600AA w/ 2" ports - $300). In addition, it looks like I have a small leak back near the motor as well, so I just ordered a Hayward GoKit3.

Question is should I just replace the pump at this point with a "value" pump like an XtremepowerUS pump ($220) or something similar ?

We are looking to retire and move out of this house around this time next year so I would rather not pay $800 for another Super Pump.

Thanks so much.

Welcome to TFP! Since that leak appears to be on the pump pot, it's considered the suction side of the system and you might get away with applying a sealant directly to that area on the outside - clean & dry of course. Can't really hurt to try.

Thanks so much. I'm so glad you said that b/c I was thinking that as well (but didn't put it together as the suction side). I was thinking about using JB Weld - should I use Plastic Weld or Water Weld ? (or something else ?)

If that picture is from the motor end of the pump looking forward, it is in the pressure side of the wet end. Anything used to seal that leak (which looks to be a split seam) will be temporary. Its hard to "band aid" a pressure leak successfully as the base material continues to expand on pressure which will loosen any bond the patch material will have. Its amazing how much pump bodies expand and contract in use. This is the one area that I have found that even PlastAid doesn't work long.

Thanks so much. I think you're right, it's the pressure side right ? (Vertical pipe out of pump into filter push/pull valve.)

Yes, that is the pressure side of the wet end. The low pressure side (suction) stops at the inlet to the impeller (eye).
It also looks like you have a leaking shaft seal, based on the corrosion of the motor at the mounting plate.

So back to the original question - any advice on a pump replacement for me ? Again, we are selling house by this time next year so don't really want to spend $800 on new pump. I am watching all threads here on pump replacement but they are for $$$ pumps. I also saw the discussion on VS law now but I can still just use a single-speed right ?.

Hey Gang -

I hit you all up back in August to discuss options after I discovered a little leak in my Super Pump housing. Further CSI at the time revealed a likely hairline crack along the back seam (if that even is a seam). Since it was such a very little leak first tried some JB Plastic Weld, but that really didn't do much at all.

As "winter" is setting in down here in Dallas (haa ! 75 degrees today  ), the leak seemed to be getting worse but still just a little tiny deal.

Well given the last thing I wanted was for something to go bad when real cold weather eventually gets here, I went ahead a bit the bullet and bought a new OEM pump housing = $300 - thanks a lot Hayward you BWBs !!! Also went ahead and did a full filter clean as well.
