Thank you for a nice site. I could certainly use your help, thanks.

I am in Central Texas and just took over a small (10,000 gallons) fiberglass pool for my 86 year old neighbor. The Professional pool company was fired due to allowing swimming in the pool with FC level at 22 and having numerous algea blooms a year. Not knowing anything about a pool the pool supply store saw me coming and sold me $400 worth of pool supplies; 40 lbs of Borates, PoolRX, Chlorine pucks and (10) 1lb bags of shock so I could shock the pool weekly. Although the pool had never looked better, after installing all the products as told, something did not feel right. I had the water tested and the Copper level was 1.5. The copper was at .5 when I was told to install the PoolRX. The CYA was at 130. The copper was alarming to me. The guy at the pool store said I HAD to maintain low PH and I should backwash numerous times in attempt to lower the copper to prevent staining, however I should not remove the PoolRX. Looking ways to remove the copper, I found CuLator. They recomended I get the CYA down under 50 or nothing would work. We made a plan to drain the pool 2 times a day for 3 days on top of the 3 times I had already backwashed to lower the CYA, then install a metal sequesterer (I am going to use Bio Dex Protect all Supreme) then slowly raise Chlorine lever to 2-3ppm with liquid chlorine. I removed PoolRX and the Chlorine Pucks from the pool. Installed 4.0 Culator packet in the pump basket along with (2) 1.0 Culator packets inthe skimmer basket. I have over the course of 3 days drained the pool down 6-7" eight times. The Copper is down under 1 and the CYA is under 50. Will install the Bio-Dex protect all then wait 2 hours and start raising chlorine.

It would help to know how many GPM the pump is pumping.

As I'm sure others will tell you here on TFP, your first investment should be in a quality test kit. That means either a Taylor K-2006c or TF-100 from tftestkits.net. The latter helps support the free advice on this site, and goes a LONG way to saving you tons of money in the long run.

For example, I now spend approximately $0.65 a day to maintain a pool that's so clear it's tough to tell there's even water in it.

Please don't buy anything else without the advice from folks here - as you said the pool store saw you coming (we've all been there).

While you're waiting for your test kit to come, spend time in Pool School (links at the top of every page) - this will help you make sense of how we have the cleanest pools around, and for the least amount of time and money.

Welcome! Looks like a lot of chemicals for your pool! You will have to decide going forward if you want to still use pool chemicals or go forward with 'trouble free pool Care' which consists of testing your water yourself, adding bleach daily, and Muratic acid when needed. If you want more info on tfpc we can get you fixed up but you will have to stop all this chemicals that will ruin your pool.

Either way, don't put any chemicals through the skimmer, hard on shaft seal and shaft on the pump.

Quick google of "p2r 3/4 hp pool pump gpm" came up with 52, but you should find a head chart
