New Pool Owner, rust on bottom and general cleaning

Good morning all,

New pool owner here, I am working to get a grasp on how to properly clean the pool. It is a concrete in-ground pool and the fine folks over at Pinch a Penny estimated it to be about 10,000 gallons.

First Problem: It looks like the previous owners left metal in the pool, almost looks like BBs. This has left little rust circles throughout the pool. I have tried a normal pool brush, a metal brush, acid in a sock (somewhat ok results, not a complete removal) and a Stain Eraser (Chunk of rubber with an abrasive in it). The eraser did the best job and got a few spots to fade, but others it made no dent in it. I ordered a pumice stone type scrubber today, will try that when it comes in. Any other ideas?

Second Problem: In doing the above steps, scrubbing an area shows that there is a some build up and the pool bottom isn't really that clean... in all honesty, it looks fine but seeing the 3in scrubbed circle, it got me wondering what it would take to get the whole bottom clean.

Third Problem: There is some streaking on the walls, not sure what it is but its a hair on the green side, but I feel it be more on the dirt side and not the algae side. Pinch a Penny did give me a algae killer a couple weeks ago.

I have attached a few pictures, any black spots are the rust points I'm trying to get out. In the shallow side, look at the black spots and you can see a clean circle around the rust after scrubbing. And some of the wall pictures you can see a hint of the stuff I'd like to clean off the walls. (Didn't come out super clear)

Thank you for any help and advice!

Hello Dan and welcome to the forum! For those suspected rust spots/stains, try some crushed Vitamin C tablets in a thin sock or nylon and see if that helps remove them (iron). If it makes them darker, it's probably copper so you can try some dry acid in a sock. As for the suspected algae streaks, you can try rubbing a chlorine tab on that area to see if it fades to confirm it's organic. Might help to also post a full set of water test results for us, preferably with a TF-100 or Taylor K-2006C test kit.

Hi Pat, thank you for your reply!

I'll head out to CVS in a day or two to pick up some tablets and report back, same for the tablet on the wall too.

Below is my Pinch a Penny test from the 5th... the only difference is I added in another tablet because they said it could use more... so the Chlorine should be higher than what is listed here. I do have the test strips but they don't seem to match up with what Pinch A Penny says, so I just bought a Poolmaster Test kit with the chemicals and I want to see if the results better match Pinch a Penny or the test strips I already have. I know one of them is wrong.

Dan, based on that test result product, the #1 concern right now is your CYA would appear to be too high. I say "appear" because we really like to see owners test their own water with one of those test kits. Accuracy is #1. But if you take those results for what they are worth, the CYA is too high, and as you can see on our [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA], your FC is too low and can't keep up. Chlorine tabs or bags of shock will do that. Regular bleach (plain) is the way to go to increase FC. My gut tells me you are on the verge of an algae breakout there, and the best way to eliminate algae is by performing a SLAM Process. To do that however, you need two primary tools - bleach and ... wait for it .... one of those test kits. :blah:. But look that info over and let us know if you have any other questions. We'll be happy to help.
