New Pool Owner - Chemical Supplies Needed

Good day!

This weekend I will start maintaining the pool chemicals in my pool vs having someone do it for me.

As not to over purchase items / but things I don’t need, could someone list what I need to have on hand, please?

move read through all this but a simple list would be helpful. If certain brands are better to get, that is most helpful too.

I did purchase the TF-100 kit.

One other note, recent water test did show copper and manganese present. Levels were slightly higher than from source water.

thanks so much!

Do you have your test kit yet? If so, post a set of test results.

In the short term, you will need liquid chlorine. You may need muriatic acid based on your test results. Less likely is stabilizer and baking soda.

All of those items can be found at Walmart (exc the acid), Home Depot, Lowes, etc. Brands really do not matter.

You have a chemical company in Spring that sells bulk liquid chlorine to the public. I believe it is Napco Chemical. You must have a certain type container for them to fill it. Check with them.

Please fill out your signature.

I suggest you read ABC's of Pool Water Chemistry.

Unfortunately the only way to remove copper is to swap out the water for copper-free water. You can minimize the effects of it in the water by using a sequesterant.

I haven’t heard of manganese being a concern in water before - that one is new to me.

Just had a water test run at Texsun Pools - at a total loss (and very disappointed it’s this way given I had someone reputable handling it).

Alkalinity - 41
PH - 7.8
Free Chlorine - 8.8
Total Chlorine - 8.8
CYA - 150 (or more - their test only goes to 159)
Calcium Hardness - 130
Low Optimizer - 2

Recommendation from Texsun

12 lbs Balance PAK 100

1 pt Acid

drain some of the water and refill

turn down chlorine (

Need to get the CYA down. But you really should base your plan on your own testing. Whenever someone gives advice based on pool store testing it always ends up not working....because the testing wasn’t accurate.

OK -- you could keep going but it gets crazy from here.

You essentially need to fully drain and refill. This time of year that can be problematic if it is hot and the sun shines on your pool surfaces.
Read Draining - Further Reading for your options. Then we can provide some guidance.

I already am! Lol

so with that being said (and a full drain recommended) - the plaster company will be replastering my pool in about 3 weeks give or take a week due to an issue with the initial fill.

Any issue or concerns I should have if I wait. And if I wait, how best to maintain the other levels for the next few weeks.

My hope was to get some time and knowledge under my belt before the replaster so I could manage the new plaster better than what the guys did with this one.

Given that you’ll be draining your pool in 3 weeks, I would just try to maintain by adding chlorine until then. Use Pool Math to figure out how much.

As far as when you are testing your new fill, don’t forget to check ph too.
