New pool new path ideas

I’m really at a loss as to how to finish this project my husband started it but didn’t seem to plan it through fully in 3-D as far as the depth so it’s possible he will just have to remove his stones and put more fill material in looking for any suggestions on finishing. Along the house I would like to put some groundcover and plants. It’s a combo of shade and sun. Along the pool I will either just put a small pebble layer or some plants but with four kids and both of us working full-time I really want to minimize the amount of work here in the future. I cannot dig beside the pool because the oval has struts reaching out to the edge of the path.

We put in an above ground over the last year and in the fall we had two small platform decks built off the house.

The grass in the backyard never really grows because it is very shady in patches-

So we decided to put down a simple paver path to keep feet dry and out of the mud.

My husband started his dig and levelled and then laid some appropriate stuff under the stones. His plan is to put gravel along the sides of the pavers and then orders along the house and pool

Normally he’s a good planner but I think DIY overwhelms him. Beside the pool and beside the house the earth is higher and sloped up a little bit which means that water will run into the trough of the path. I don’t mind that so much but I can’t find what to do to retain the earth on either side about 4 inches and most edging is shorter

I know this is probably the least attractive pool project on here-sorry for that we are really limited by space.

Stop it! We never met a pool we didn't like!
I'd probably just gravel/deco rock that whole strip for drainage then use some planters or planter boxes on top of it for a bit of plant bling.

If the path is indeed 4" lower than the surrounding earth then I would buy some more paver/stone base and raise the path up some it is level with the surrounding area. If you don't, then you will always have water sitting in that area after a rain. Is there a way for the water to drain out of that area? Is it possible to put in a french drain to help move the water? I like the idea of the borders/edging defining the path and then filling it in with some decorative stone. Then maybe mulch between the edging and the house and again between the edging the pool. So far it looks good and straight but put the extra work in now to finish it up so you don't get frustrated with poor results later.
