Hey all,
10k Latham fiberglass pool
Philadelphia area
Salt water system
Jandy Sand Filter
(Unfortunately) a Jandy 1.65hp single speed pump.
NO Automation (Pool only, manual controls were fine for us).
Jandy 260k NG heater

Recently had a 10k gal Latham Bay Isle (Freeform) fiberglass pool installed and looking to figure out the chemical balancing for the opening in a couple weeks. We are going to open the first week of April as the cover we have at the moment is falling apart, and we haven’t seen freezing temps in a few weeks now. The pool is also heated and not very big, so we can heat it up if desired.

I am removing the cover in the morning as the concrete is getting formed and poured. I do not plan on putting it back on as the water bags are leaking, and the cover is beginning to develop holes in it.

I digress. It will be in the 60’s-70’s for the first month it is open. There is a LOT of dirt in the water, and there is likely going to be a small amount of concrete debris in it from them pouring (PB told us this). I will be vacuuming to waste when we open the pool as the dirt will have settled to the bottom.

Onto balancing. I know how to start up the pool itself (equipment wise), dewinterize and get the filter system going. I know the pH is hovering around 6.8 or so. No other chemicals in the water at the moment.

Since the water will be colder, and it is a saltwater pool, we are thinking of dropping a chlorine tab in the skimmer for the first few weeks until the water is a more balmy temperature for the SWG to function properly.

So my question is, where do I start with balancing? Do I get the pH and alkalinity within range first then shock it? I will use dichlor shock. Then do I add the CYA? Salt? Not sure what amount of chemicals I need and not sure what order they should go in. I know I will need to bring the pH and alkalinity up, shock once, add enough CYA and add the salt. Unsure of the amounts and what order they should be put in.

I have been told I can add the salt at any time. I already have the salt, CYA (stablilzer), Total alkalinity powder (Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate), and pH up (Sodium Carbonate). Will be purchasing one pound of dichlor shock and a handful of tabs until the SWG can be turned on. I have enough of each chemical to balance the pool other than shock. I have a Taylor kit ordered. Waiting for it to arrive.

Any advice appreciated. I WILL NOT FLOC THE POOL!

Have you tested to see how short the water is of stabilizer (CYA)? If adding CYA, its best to add about 3/4* of the desired amount and put it in a big sport sock which you then hang over the water on a broom stick or something similar. You want to keep it off the wall! Since the water is going to be cold still, no harm in letting it dissolve slowly. If you want to rush it some just squeeze the sock now and then (milky water will appear).

*best to under dose a bit rather than overshoot your goal level. You can tweak it over time if necessary.
