New Pool Build, Plumbing Tips

Was searching for a thread that would help me but didn't find one.

I am just about to start plumbing my new pool. It is a simple, vinyl lined sports pool 32X16, about 15000 gallons. I have one skimmer and main drains plumbed back to pad (2 drains but 1 line). I have 2 returns, gas heater, VS pump and cartridge filter. I live in Canada, so have a need to winterize. I also have a salt water generator.

I am just trying to figure out the best practices for the basics so trying to answer the following questions:
  1. Should I have separate valve for each intake line, or use a 3 way diverter valve?
  2. Should I have separate valve for each return line or use 3 way diverter valve?
  3. Where should I use unions (separate or integrated with valves)?
  4. Where do I need check valves?
  5. Do I need to have a bypass for gas heater?
Much thanks for any guidance.

Joel

Let me give a shot at what I would suggest.
1. With just two lines coming in on the suction side, a three way diverter will work.
2. With only two returns (that is not many, most like 4 or more) a single diverter valve should work so you can balance the returns as necessary.
3. Use pump unions. The heater and SWCG will have unions.
4. None are needed.
5. Up to you. Not a bad idea to be able to bypass heater. Reduces your pump pressure when you bypass the heater.
