Hi All, I'm Patty from NJ and so happy I found this site! I apologize in advance for this long introduction, but I've been talking to myself for days about this predicament.
We inherited my pool when we bought the house in 2012. My husband was thrilled to finally have an inground pool and took pretty good care of it. Unfortunately he passed suddenly in 2015 and since that time I have been struggling to keep this pool in check. Every time I think I have it down--BAM! Something new happens that throws me off. We are having a bout of extremely hot weather here right now and I've been battling a persistent green algae problem. My pool service opens and closes the pool but offers very little support throughout the summer, so it's been all me. I consulted my local pool store's staff and they recommended I buy cal-hypo shock and double shock the pool. It didn't help much so this past week I put in two gallons of liquid shock because I read online that works better. Now yesterday I noticed my in-line chlorinator that has tri-chlor pucks in it has grey sediment all over the outside of it and the entire filter area stinks of chlorine. Finally my pool guy answered my text with the picture of the chlorinator and told me to shut it off, don't put any more shock in the pool, and run the filter 24 hours/day until Sunday night when he wants me to put floc in then shut off the filter and he will come on Monday to vacuum the sediment out for me. Problem is--I can't find a bottle of pool floc to save my life anywhere local here in NJ. I'm afraid he won't come Monday if I can't put this floc stuff in and the algae will just overtake the pool. Not sure if I was supposed to go into all of this here on my "introduction" post, but that's why I'm here. I saw online that mixing different types of chlorine is a big "no, no." Now I'm afraid when/if the pool guy comes on Monday he'll take the top of the chlorinator and it'll kill him!
Thanks for any advice anyone can provide!

Welcome to the forum!
Please do not put Floc in your pool. It will create a mess.
You need to follow the SLAM Process. To do that, you need a proper test kit. I suggest the TF-100 / TFPRO or Taylor K2006C. A proper test kit is needed to get the accurate water chemistry results needed to follow the TFP protocols.

While you are waiting on your test kit, add 5 ppm FC worth of liquid chlorine / plain bleach to your pool each evening with the pump running. This will replenish the FC lost each day to the sun and also inhibit any algae in the water from growing further.
I suggest you read through Pool Care Basics - Trouble Free Pool and even look at a few of our videos TFP-TV - Trouble Free Pool
