New house with Saltwater

2 homes ago I had a pool and struggled with chlorine levels. Found this site and changed the way I maintained that pool. You guys helped me discover that I had extremely high CYA levels from using chlorine tabs, and how to SLAM my pool back into good shape. It literally was "troublefree" after buying a good test kit, never taking water samples to the pool store again, and adopting the BBB method. Thank you to everyone here.

I am currently in the process of buying a home that has an in ground pool with a saltwater system. I have never owned or maintained a saltwater pool so I am trying to learn the differences. Such as, how exactly does the chlorine operate. Does it generate whenever the pump is on, or is there run time settings based off of how much needs to be generated? I am used to the method of test chlorine, dump bleach as needed = beautiful pool (assuming all other levels are where they should be)

I assume besides the chlorination method, all other testing and maintaining is the same as a regular chlorine pool?

Just trying to get my ducks in a row before I move in and need to start maintaining this one.
Thanks

No,

Welcome back! Generally yes the TFP methodology stays the same you just have a cell with catalyst coated plates that make FC . Some of the ranges for test results change a little for balancing but it's very similar. There are several different ways to control. The cell controller has a power setting from 0-100%. And you also can control cell run time. How you do this depends a little on your automation system. Here's the great news: Pool Math has been updated for SWG. All you need to do is enter your brand and model number so it can predict how many ppm FC will be added for the %power and run time. Once you have the details please add to your signature. We love the salt system, no more jugs! All I do is add a little MA every now and then. Wife loves the feel and won't ever let me change back.

Good luck with your new pool!

Chris

How exciting!

Pool School for You :D

One difference: You do run the CYA slightly higher since the FC is being added continually/automatically instead of manually

Thanks for the feedback guys!
I need to order a test kit so I will have it once escrow closes. Previously I had a taylor kit, model 2006 if I remember correct. I bought that over the tf-100 due to the budget I was working with back then.
I am looking for suggestions for what to order now. Is the tf-100 still the best option out there, or is there a better option for salt? or just a separate salt test add-on to the kit. I will also have a hot tub, so if that makes any difference in test kit options.

TF-100 is still the best option & price :)
The Salt Test kit, Speedstir & XL option are good add-ons :D
