New Homeowners - Struggling with Neglected Above-Ground Vinyl SWG Pool

Hi everyone,

We recently bought a house that came with an above-ground vinyl saltwater pool, but it seems the pool has been neglected for quite some time. We're trying to learn how to care for it, but we're struggling to figure out where to start. The pool inspector we hired wasn't much help, and we've been wrestling with this pool for days now.

Currently, the water is a milky white, hazy mess. There doesn’t seem to be any slime in the pool itself, and we’ve cleaned the bottom as much as possible. However, when we took out the water filter, it was completely green and coated with what I assume is algae. We tried soaking the filter in a cleaning liquid for hours, which helped a bit, but not enough. After several attempts at cleaning, I ended up manually scraping the algae from the flaps, and it seems the flow is restored now. Unfortunately, the filter is still greenish with patches of slime.

We also have an autopilot controlling the SWG, which is showing an error code "Warning: Low Amps: Cell?". I Googled a bit and tested the cell, finding that the salinity is at 3900, 19v, and 1.3amps.

The pH was initially at 7.9, but after adding some chemicals, it's now down to 7.6. We added some algaecide, but we're not sure if it did anything. I also just added some "super water clarifier," thinking the milkiness might be due to limescale buildup.

I just read about the importance of proper water testing and am considering getting the Taylor 2006-Salt test kit.

We’re completely at a loss and don’t know which problem to tackle first—water clarity, the green filter, the salt cell issue, or something else. Any advice or input would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum!
You need to follow the SLAM Process. To do that, you need a proper test kit. I suggest the TF-100/Pro or Taylor K2006C. A proper test kit is needed to get the accurate water chemistry results needed to follow the TFP protocols.

While you are waiting on your test kit, add 5 ppm FC worth of liquid chlorine / plain bleach to your pool each evening with the pump running. This will replenish the FC lost each day to the sun and also inhibit any algae in the water from growing further.
I suggest you read through Pool Care Basics - Trouble Free Pool and even look at a few of our videos TFP-TV - Trouble Free Pool

If filter cartridge is not compromised, just clean it well and use it.

Please add what filter you have to your signature.

I suspect it is best to evaluate the SWCG system but not spend any money on it this late in the year for your area. Use liquid chlorine.
