I just acquired a house with a pool and just here to learn and help others. I am not a first time pool owner owned a pool for several years on my previous house.

I am proud of it since when I took the house over the pool was not in the best of shape had many acid stains needed to be acid washed and the waterfall feature was broke but all is running now.

Welcome to TFP!!:handwave:

Well, I'm going ot point out - you have fallen in with a bunch of folks who believe in taking care of their pools themselves.

We base our pool care system on accurate testing and only adding what the pool needs, when it needs it. To do that you need your own accurate test kit. I would suggest you order a TF100 test kit andf stay away form pool store testing.

You say you have had a pool, but again we feel our methods of pool care are more "trouble free" than what most folks are used to. How much Pool School have you read? Start with these:
ABCs of Water Chemistry
Recommended Pool Chemicals
How to Chlorinate Your Pool

So again, welcome to TFP!!

Keep reading, we will save you money in the future.....

I am definitely seeing that wow this is why I love the internet and forums totally wasn't expecting a site that would educate me on how to use bleach rather than hundreds of dollars of Chlorine. Definitely glad to have found this place and thanks for starting such a cool site.

Been doing a lot of reading. One odd thing about my pool was figuring out how many gallons the previous owner stated 36,000 and when I did the acid wash and refill it took a day and a half I called the city and estimate based on the gallon usage my pool is actually a 16,000 gallon on the refill. Not really sure what the previous owner was thinking. To make sure I was not crazy I was googling 36,000 gallon pool pictures and just as I thought 36,000 gallons is much bigger than what I have in my back yard.

I also think the previous owner was running the pool pumps too long he had 10 hours on the filter pump and 8 hours on the booster pump for the polaris. My filter pump can do 80 GPM so when I math that out 16,000 / 80 = 200 minutes / 60 minutes = 3.3 hours so I reset my filter pump to run during the day 12pm to 4pm and the booster pump I took down to 2 hours.

Maybe a guru can chime in but I believe I am doing this correctly. One thing I obviously have been doing wrong is just taking a water sample to Leslies and getting it tested then buying whatever the heck they tell me once a week.
