Good evening all.
Just purchased a new home a week ago today. This will be the first pool I have owned and cared for so really starting from scratch. I am a bit of a DIYer so am totally buying in to the TFP concept.
From what I can tell the previous owner only used pucks and I found a few bottles of muratic acid. Also found a tube of test strips that expired about 5 years ago. I received my new TF100 kit today and ran a battery of tests to see what I’m working with. Some of the numbers looked WAY off so I ran all the tests a second time just to make sure I was following proper procedures. All numbers matched, the first and second round.
Pool built in 2012. Other info in sig. I will update my sig with the type of Pentair pump and cartridge filter tomorrow. I also have some questions about the plaster surface but I will save them for when I am able to supply some photos.
Here are my numbers, good bad and the ugly. I have some work to do.
FC 15
pH 7.8
TA 150
CH 1175
CYA 115
CSI .83
Temp 75

Welcome to the forum!
Well, with that CH, time to drain. Are you sure of that number? What is the CH of your fill water? With the rain you get in Florida I am amazed the CH could be that high.

For the CYA, did you do the extended test to get 115? Normally can only get whole numbers, like 80, 90, etc as the vial is logarithmic and you can not extrapolate.

Confirm the CH number and we can discuss exchanging some water for fresh.
I suggest you read ABC's of Pool Water Chemistry and consider reviewing the entire Pool School eBook.

Thanks for the quick response, Mk!
It may be late tonight or tomorrow but I will retest the CH and pull a sample of the tap water here. I did take a guess in the CYA. The markings on the tube begin at 110 and go down from there. I lost sight of the black dot before the 110 mark so took a stab at where it would be if the numbers extended up numerically. I followed the directions on the laminated card so not sure if that is the extended test. I’ll check it out. I will look over the ABC again and check out the ebook as well. Thanks!

S,

Welcome to TFP and congrats on your new home/pool! I was where you are about 4 years ago. Got rid of the service and started taking care of the pool myself. Within a few weeks I had TFP implemented at a total cost of $10/mo. Every time I wasn't sure about something I had an armada of expert help. You already have two experts guiding you. They'll help you correct any chemistry issues from previous owners then you'll be off to the races!

Good luck with your new pool and please don't hesitate to ask any questions!

Chris
