new pool, just filled it a week and 1/2 ago. Had 8 people over to swim and numbers have never been the same since. I know I can’t shock the pool yet, or turn on the salt so I’m doing the best I can but it seems the CC level is always high.
It did get pretty cloudy the day after we had 8 people in the pool and I started adding acid and bleach, but I fear I may have been too late?
The first day I noticed the pool was cloudy I tested and FC and TC were at 0. Ph was up well past 8.2. TA was at 80. I added a pint and 9oz of MA & 14 oz of 10% chlorine.
The next day of course because I didn’t add enough chlorine my FC was at 0 again and my TC was at 1. My Ph was the same over 8.2. I added 20 oz of CYA because that was also testing at less than 30. I also added 26 oz of 10% chlorine again hoping to get free chlorine up to at least 1. This is the day that worries me though, the TC was at 1 so doesn’t that mean something’s in the water? How can I get this TC down to .5 without shocking the pool? (New gunite)
I added more chlorine again this morning and when I got home re ran all the test.
Any idea how I can get this CC to decrese? I’m hesitant to add too much chlorine or that TC number will sky rocket so I’ve just been adding little bits of chlorine each day.
the spillover is on 24 hours at day as well as the pump at this point because I’m adding cya again today. I’ll shut that spillover off so it’s only running a few hours a day.
also adding the cya helped the ph level.

Heres my current readings.
FC 1
CC 1.5
TC 2.5
PH 7.8
TA 70
Calcium 300
CYA less than 30 (I’ll add another 2 lbs tonight to get me above 60, which will also help the PH and TA. I think/hope)
I guess that’s another question will the TA increase or decrease with the addition of CYA?

thank you in advance!

If you think you have a problem brewing don’t increase your cya that much.
30/40ppm is sufficient. & get up to target 🎯 fc levels
FC/CYA Levels
Cya is an acid cyanuric acid- it will have a slight lowering effect on ph & subsequently ta

You should set the spill over to run a couple times a day to get chlorinated water circulating but it doesn’t need to run continuously. It is driving up your ph.

+1 on holding off on the CYA, but the main thing is you are not adding enough chlorine.

Your daily additions are not going to move the needle much on your FC:
  • 26 oz - Added 1.8 FC
  • 14 oz - This one added 1.0 of FC
That is what you are adding on a daily basis, when most people lose 3-5 FC per day and even more if you have low CYA, high bather load, and possibly algae.

Let's call your CYA 30 (assuming you have not added any more), your FC should be 4-6 and never ever ever ever below 2. I would add enough liquid chlorine to get your chlorine up to 7 or even 8 so that it stays in your target range most of the day. Thats going to be a little bit less than 1 gallon per my math.

Thank you all so much!
Update…I did add a lot of stabilizer (not quite as much as I originally posted), as of today I’m at 40.
I had no real understanding of how much chlorine was burning off durning the day so the reply’s really helped me. I’ve been able to get my FC up to 6-7 daily so when I lose 3-4 I’m still at least 2.
As far as my ph is concerned it’s staying right around 7.5, but it seems turning off my spillway isn’t as easy as just turning it on and off in the app and making a schedule for it to run a few times a day. So I’ll talk to the PB and see if I can get them to set that up for me so it’s not constantly running.
Again, thank you all so much for the help. I know this was basic info for you all but a completely mystery to me!

Great. One key point is that your FC requirements are a sliding scale depending on your CYA. Now that your CYA is 40 (where it should be in this heat), your FC minimum is now 3 not 2.

Below is a colorful chart I made if helpful. There is also the link in my signature to the official TFP chart:

Before you add anymore cya do an
Overnight Chlorine Loss Test.
If you fail its SLAM Process time.
If you pass & have crystal clear water with no algae (dead or alive) you should then raise your cya to 70ppm & increase your fc accordingly
FC/CYA Levels
then set your swcg to maintain target 🎯 fc levels.
You can use PoolMath
effects of adding to determine your necessary % & run times for your swcg to acheive your average daily fc needs.
