$4-$5 per hour which gives me 1-2 degree temperature rise/hour. Overall my gas has increased about $2k/year just for pool use. I am on the budget plan and I suggest you sign up for the same. Otherwise you are looking at $500/month summer gas bills.

FYI: I do not use a solar cover. I tried and it was simply too much bother. However, if you are religious about using the cover, you would probably save about 1/2 of that gas bill.

When you say 2k/yr....you mean from May-October??

I am on the budget plan. I used to pay $150/month for gas. I now pay $310. Budget plan is they even out your bills over 12 months so there are no surprises. But yes, that extra is strictly from running the gas pool heater from May - September (I usually don't go beyond).

The only thing on gas in my house is the pool. I turn it on May 15, off Oct 15. I use $1300 in gas for the season. It is set at 84 degrees. Northeast Ohio. Gas cost may be different in NYS.

One thousand cubic feet (Mcf) of natural gas equals 1.036 MMBtu, or 10.36 therms.

I used 13.2Mcf last month at $6.25/Mcf. Or about $82.50. In therms, that would be 136 therms (13.2 x 10.36). 136 therms at .6$ = $81.60.

The other way...1Mcf = 10 Therms. .6$ x 10.36 = $6.216 per Mcf.

Either way, just about the same.

We have an 18x36 in ground. I use a solar cover when we're not in the pool, and we get full sun for 90% of daylight hours (so that helps a bunch). For the shoulder months I try to get the temp to 88 and I'll only run the heater as needed. If we're having friends and family over sometimes I'll bump it to 90 or 92 depending on the day. Last year my gas bill was a little over $400 in total for the heater. I have it setup on a separate meter (and line feed from the main) and the pool heater is the only thing on it. The only downside is we have a ~$12/month minimum whether we use any gas or not.

If you have a lot of sun coverage a solar cover and nice reel could pay for itself in no time. However, I understand if you don't want to mess with it.

$400 is not too bad assuming a 5-6 month period. For sporadic heating, gas heater is probably much better than a heat pump. Do you recall the bill in the shoulder months May and Sep/Oct?

I just pulled up my account online. September was my highest month at $140 total (fees and all), and October was $35. We ended up not swimming much into October and beyond last year. May last year was $11. We got warm weather early and I use a solar cover and the pool gets full sun 90% of the day.
