This winter I was lucky to have someone give me a pool as long as I took it down and hauled it away. I am super excited for this as I grew up on a lake constantly swimming and since moving away the largest pool I have had is one of those 6' intex deals that was more for sitting in then swimming, except for young kids. I am hoping to have the pool up and at least swimmable by the end of April where around here it can start getting into the 90s. The pool is a 24' Celebration Impress, the person I got it from was great to give me the filter, pump and some cleaning accessories, so at least that was all set. This build is a real budget build, money is tight but I could not pass on the opportunity.

I went with a liner from poolsupplies for a comparably good price ( I know there's better quality out there)
I decided on doing a salt water pool and after much back and forth I went with Pureline PL7700 (40k gallons). I read some good reviews here and although it doesn't seems to be a well used brand it was several hundred dollars cheaper than the Hayward I was planning on going with.
The filter is a hayward, but I am not sure of the model atm. The pump I already have is a Pentair Dynamo 1.5 hp, if I understand right a variable speed is better for salt water systems so when this one goes out I'll look more into that.
Several of the bottom rails I recovered were pinholed from rust throughout so I bought a couple of replacements. There were some borderline ones but the integrity of the rail did not seem to be affected so I cleaned those up. I am planning on spraying them all down with truck bed spray before laying them down.

The electrical was already run near where I am putting the pad, I am going to change the breaker for a GFCI breaker and then on the end put a Intermatic T101R with everything connecting to that. I got lucky and found one on amazon warehouse for $20. For the bonder I bought Perma-Cast PB2008 also on deal at amazon. I haven't bought the 8 AWG cable yet but the best deal was on a site I found here, I just have to find that again when it comes closer to installation date.

I also found found a pool cove set that fits my size pool for $30 on amazon warehouse that will save more than that in the sand I don't use I was almost going to get a ground pad but couldn't justify the cost.

Now for some pics, hopefully I do this right.

I tried doing the sod removal manually and spent 2 days getting very little done then decided to spend the $100 to rent a sod cutter, best decision yet. It removed the top layer like butter and did in 1 hr what would have taken days maybe weeks to do manually.

Electric is the path to the left, I am going to move it slightly behind where the filter is sitting and have the pad in front of it. Then all the plumbing will be underground since it is a good 5-6ft from the pool edge.

Eventually I am going to put some sort of path from our back porch but that is my last concern. I could not avoid cutting it since I had the machine doing the work though.

I do have to level the pool area still though, this will probably take the longest of everything. It definitely has me wishing I was much younger, I never remember digging taking the wind out of me so bad. Luckily it doesn't seem as bad as it looked. Bringing everything down to the lowest point I estimate about 1-1.5" has to come off the majority of the space.

Thank you everyone, This weekend I hope to figure out a better method of getting the soil mostly level as this board technique doesn't seem like it will be too reliable over the whole area. I have a laser level for small indoor use I used to do some tiling that hopefully can be used in the dark with a marked pole to at least give me a more accurate measurement in the areas where the rails will sit.

Fingers crossed that I get a bunch done this weekend and next week as my deadline is coming up fast and I still have so much to do. I have been doing little bits each day after work but by the time I get to it after work I only have about 40 minutes of daylight.

Well got a little bit accomplished in the last week. Got my breaker changed to a gfci breaker, uncovered the underground line to the pint where the direction will change and have dug...and dug.. and some more digging. Still have a bunch to go though and of course during my digging I uncover a rock which may or may not be connected to some bedrock of sorts. I am lucky though that it is only on the outer foot or so, If I wanted to I could probably move the whole pool over the 6" or so, even where it's at now it may just fall outside the frame line but I have a rock chisel already so I'm going to manually cut the top off to the correct height.

I decided to go with a line level for my leveling. I did try a cheap 20$ laser on a pedestal form Harbor Freight but I should have known, it wouldn't even stay level when swiveling. Spending some time with this I found that about 1/4 of the area has to come down about 6", which actually was surprisingly easier to take care of than the parts where I only have to take of 1" since I could use the broad side of a pickax which I can be pretty accurate with. The 1" areas I have to scrape down with a spade, which on normal soil would probably be fine but not clay.

I am only guessing here but once I have the ground level I hope to have the rest done in 2-3 weeks at most. I will pre-dig the trenches for the water pipes but, won't actually lay all of those after the pool is up so I can make sure everything aligns.

A quick question : Will the sand base take care of the ground unevenness?

I am going to get the outside ring level and flat, the inside is already pretty level at this point. What I am finding is there is some unevenness or ridges, less than 1/2" in spots but still noticeable. This seems to change as well depending on how most the clay is, when it dries it seems to harden and those ridges become more pronounced. I can continue to smooth out these spots but, if the sand will take care of this that will save me some labor.

I'm hoping to post some more pics tonight to show some progress. I basically have the electrical all done and plan to install the pad for the equipment today. I laid out the ring just to see how it will sit and plan to rent the laser transit this weekend to make that level ring.

For pavers under the supports I went with 7x4x1.75" bricks and will put 2 for each support. I was having trouble finding anything smaller than a 12x12 that wasn't decorative and even those were $2 a piece. The bricks were $.25 each and are pretty uniform so I believe should serve the same function.

Assuming I get everything done this weekend that I plan to next step is ordering the sand and then up goes the pool. I do still have to order the bonding wire and since I'm going to have my plumbing under ground there will be that labor but, digging trenches is much easier than leveling!

The sand will look good when you put it down BUT as soon as you start adding water it will get "smooched" down and you will see/feel the unevenness again :( My smoothness lasted for a few months then little divots were seen. No big deal to me.

That's what I was afraid of, for the most part I can live with it, but I will keep that in mind before laying the sand down and try to at least make it less noticeable.

So if you moist tamp the sand, that will help set it up. Ours is still level, but anywhere someone "shoves" off the bottom (kids) it creates a divot, which we can smooth back.

I never had a pool with a sand bottom do that, where pushing off moves the sand, but in all honesty I may never have been in one that was built proper with the right amount of sand either. I helped my FIL years and years ago with a 12' one and he was happy with barely 1/2" of sand needless to say half a season in you could feel pebbles under your feel, luckily no sharp ones though.

So now some more pics. I really feel like this weekend I will get the support bases in/ level and there is not much to go from there. Leveling was something I would not want to repeat but it went pretty smoothly overall...minus the boulder. I also believe that boulder will fall just outside the ring and where it doesn't I think I have gotten it low enough to be level, of course I will remedy that when i get the laser if it is not.

This is pretty much where I am, the ring is in there so I can get a better perspective of where the supports will go. Since this was a used pool I am using the filter and return cutouts that are already there.

The rock and my ring. It may need some minor adjustments but nothing that can't be done.

The pad and electric pole. A bit back I asked about making it nicer looking by making a lean-to or some sort of covering.. Manual labor said no.

Just a view from the back of the equipment, that whole de-sodded section in front of the equipment will be dug up to bury the pvc.

That is a serious rock! Small on top and bigger as it goes down. That is going to cause you problems with running your bonding wire.

Crud! I didn't even think of that... Correct me if I am wrong but the bonding wire just has to make contact to 4 points on the pool, and since it only needs to be 6-8 inches deep I think I may have 2 options. Have that rock be the ending point of the bonding wire so the wire makes something like a question mark around the pool instead of a full circle. Or, I could run the wire out a bit further for that spot to go around the rock. It is a bit hard to tell from the pictures but that ground is already down about 7" from where it originally was so if I am lucky the rock dips back down a bit behind there.

ETA: I just went out with a poker and found a track that runs behind that rock about 2' from the pool edge and goes about 8" down so I should be good to run it around there.

1/2" fill difference should be fine, you really want to keep it under 1" as that's when it starts getting soft after the pool water fill.

Little late for this curveball, xps foam floor!

Start looking on Craigslist for a two speed pump 1 hp+

Well I finally rented the laser level and I am glad I did! Using the line level I was estimating my lowest point to be about .5" lower than everything else, turns out it was actually about 2" and 3-4" in some spots and of course that low point was on the outer ring. After work I was able to work for about 2 hours before dark hit and got about 3/4 of the ring to just about level. I will also have to re-dig out the whole center portion to bring it down the additional 2-3". I also have the sand being delivered tomorrow morning. I was hoping to be able to start moving the sand tomorrow night and Sunday but it seems that will be spent leveling everything again. I have the laser until tomorrow late afternoon so I will have to get my bricks in place by then regardless.

If the weather works with me I may still be able to work on the sand this week and fingers crossed maybe put the pool up next weekend. I will still have to run the plumbing but that can wait until after the pool is up and should be easy work compared to everything else. The additional depth also means more of that big rock is exposed so I foresee more chiseling in my future as well.
