Liquid Chlorine
I have a neglected pool and welcome your advice (long story). The current status:
  • Water is an odd mix of turquoise and brown with obvious green algae and possible black algae.
  • I have been adding daily liquid chlorine at SLAM level for two weeks, but between sun, algae, and offscale CYA (<20), FC measures offscale low (<0.5) the next day.
  • I have floating Trichlor tablets adding trace levels of FC and CYA, for what it’s worth.
  • Ph is offscale high (>8.2, but it was 7.6 when I started the liquid chlorine.)
  • There is quite a bit of sediment in the bottom, too fine for the skimming net and there are occasional clumps of something that does not want to give up its water content.
  • The pump is dead. I have a new Pentair Intelliflo 3 to replace it with.
  • The cartridge filters did not seem very effective at clearing the water before the pump died. (Do they really work?)
  • The pool needs resurfacing, but I can’t afford that yet (already replaced roof, HVAC, and plumbing, finally getting to the pool.
  • I’d like to convert to a SWG and replace the broken heater for the spa.
  • This is Tucson, AZ.
If I keep up with chlorine and brushing while getting the new pump installed, will the cartridge filter be able to clear the water?

Can I install my own pump, or do I need to hire a professional? (I’m handy and an electrical engineer.)

Is there a more effective way to bring up the sediment than scraping it up in the net or agitating it so it goes through the filter (when the filter works again)?

What should be my next steps?

I’d be happy to get to a swimmable pool this summer, and deal with the rest next year.

Welcome to TFP!

Just to emphasize, you are miss the M in SLAM, which is maintain. You need to add chlorine as often as it takes to maintain your level, and that might be every hour or so. It can be gone that quickly until you get it knocked down.

Yes, you can get the water clear. It might take frequent filter cleaning at first, but it will get better as you progress.
