Need help with pool leak

I closed the pool in early November. Plugged the returns, put gizmos in the skimmers, removed plugs from the sand filter and pump, and covered the pool. There is a wall drain that cannot be plugged, so that has always been left open at closing.

I recently peeked under the cover and found the water level to be 6" lower than expected. After taking measurements I estimate that I am losing 1/4 to 1/2 inch per day. No water is coming out of the pump/filter area (other than a very slow drip from the return pipe where the salt cell goes, as in 1 drip every 5-10 seconds). I do not know if there is a tear in the vinyl liner or god forbid something wrong underground. What is the most likely scenario and what are the best steps to diagnose the problem?

I have attached photos of the wall drain and the pump setup.

The likely scenario is a pinhole leak in the liner. If you have lights in the pool, then water can leak from the light niche. Any penetration in the liner could be a leak.

You can add water to the pool and keep it filled until spring when you find the leak.

You can also let the water leak out and see where the water level stabilizes. That is the level at which you should look for the leak.

With the pool closed and pipes plugged I doubt the leak is from pipes underground.

At what point should I start filling the pool with water to protect the liner?

Depends if you want to see where the water level stabilizes and where the leak is.
