Need help with out of control pool...

Okay... finally!

Test results are:
FC - 25
CC - 0
TC - 25
pH - 7.5
T/a 540
CH - ... I never did get it blue, I tried it twice, once with the method for copper, once without ( I believe I should have copper due to the SWG right?) I did get it cloudy white at 35 drops though, or 350
CYA - 20

Yesterday I added 3 lbs of CYA, and I put three tablets in the skimmer.

Now what...

Ok there's a couple of things.
One is the TA. Redo that test and wipe the tip of the R-0009 bottle with a damp cloth between each drop. There have been reports of static affecting the drop size of the R-0009 and causing incorrectly high readings.

Next, it's time to do the overnight chlorine loss test. Run the FC and CC test this evening after the sun has gone down and then again in the morning before it comes up. Compare the two readings. If you lose 1ppm FC and have less than .5 CC's you're done shocking and can let the FC come down to the recommended level for your target CYA.

Don't worry too much about the CH it's only a concern for vinyl pools if it's really high.

Re-did the TA and this time it came to 350, turning yellow not red.

Bedtime:
FC 15.5
CC 2

Is it normal for it to change that much in a short time?

I don't know if any of you guys live in Nebraska, but here we have a general rule, probably the same as people in swampy areas... you don't go outside at this time of day without a bee keepers suit on due to mosquitoes... I think they ate about 10 lbs off me! In the morning... I'm going to be smart about it, and go out and get the water... and test it inside!

Yes, grab a sample in a plastic squeeze bottle and run inside to test it in the comfort of your own home. Your reagents will last longer indoors and you can slow down and take care to do it all correctly.

I count out loud so that if anyone tries to interrupt they will realize that I am busy and cannot answer right away.

Everyone is scared of me when I'm messing with the pool stuff anyway, lol. If they're too close they might get spazzed out upon, or sent on a mission to get something. Plus, there is no one else going to be up in our house at that time for the morning!

Yup, that is why you have to be ready to test and add more chlorine as it is needed. You got a lot of stuff in there eating that chlorine. You gotta kill it and kill it dead, all the way.

LMAO... I don't know if you've read that... but just read this : You gotta kill it and kill it dead, all the way.

And all I could think of was Clint Eastwood saying that as a line in a movie!

Is it sad that I have to look up what time the sun comes up to set my alarm? I love summer!

ETA: 6:24!!! Well if I just stay up an extra three hours I'll be right on time for that! I guess I better get to bed early tonight, or I'll never get up that early!

Yea, yea... I was up. But now I'm wondering if I had a bad test yesterday? I have not added anything since the first test at sundown, there are three trichlor tabs in the skimmer, and they're pretty whittled away though.

This morning we had

FC - 27 (up from the night which was 15.5)
CC - 1 ( down from the 2 the night test )

Sorry I forgot to mention that in order for the test to be valid you can't be adding any chlorine between the evening test and the morning test. :hammer:

With a CC of 1ppm it didn't matter anyway. It actually helped because it got your FC back up to shock level (ok past but that's ok this time).

Hold your shock level and test again tonight if you feel like it. Or you can wait for another night. It all depends on your schedule.

I don't do much... lol. I'm a nursing student, and I'm off for the summer, thus all the sleeping in. :D

Does that include the trichlor tabs? So I should pull those before I test for the evening right?

Riven,
Do you like vengence? It's time to use the pool store the way they used you. Many pool stores will provide you with sample bottles for you to bring them water samples for testing. Next time you're in the neighborhood stop in and give them a story about needing your water tested and inquire about the freebie sample bottle. That's what I did and now I test my own water way more accurately and mosquito free in my kitchen. The bonus is I get to laugh maniacally every time I read the pool companys name on the side of the bottle.

LMAO... Well, I used to run an online supply store for chinchillas... so I actually have a lot of various size of bottles and drams around. :D Anyway... this pool store would probably charge me a deposit just to take the bottle!

Okay, I'm debating on testing again tonight... or waiting another day. I guess I better decide soon. I've added NO bleach today and the basic test has been showing good high shock levels... I think the CYA finally helped, and maybe we're leveling off? I can see the third rung, pretty clearly, but no the bottom of the pool yet.
