4659649108928696746.jpgCould I get advise regarding a new pool depth. Our pool was destroyed by the recent hurricane and we must replace the entire pool, which was a traditional 16 by 32 with a deep end and diving board. We are considering replacing it with a "sport pool" design. It will be for our grand kids (age from 1 to 5) when they visit. We will not have a diving board this time. I wanted it to be deep enough for me to tread water (i'm 6 feet tall) for the very rare occasion when I might swim myself. My pool builder gave me this design to consider, it will end up being 18 by 36. I am concerned about the sudden drop off in the middle, but otherwise like the design, since it results in a large shallow area on each end of the pool and retains a deep swimming area also. There would be steps on each end, but no other additions. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Welcome to TFP.

3.5' is too shallow.

Make it 4 feet sloping to 5'.

You can swim fine in 4' to 5' water.

Your grandkids will grow up quickly. Design it for how they will be, not how they are now.

Confirm with the builder the water depth means from the middle of the skimmer to the pool bottom. Not to top of coping.

Your grandkids will grow like weeds and depth won't be a concern soon. (A little bit longer for the one year old, but still, it won't be long).

While depth *is* a concern, I'd rather have them contained to one shallow area instead of potentially life guarding two areas.

Mark out a 18x18 area somewhere with string and then cut it in half to envision the 2 smaller areas. 'Hop in' both sizes to get a feel for the traditional pool vs the sport pool.

I like ajw22's suggestions. I have the traditional shallow/deep end pool. It's lousy for water volleyball which is a favorite activity when there is a party. A sports pool layout would be very helpful with this activity.
