I have an old Nautilus ns-60 DE filter that doesn't seem to keep most of the DE in it. When I would backwash and refill with about 4# of de (per local pool folks--they said do not do all 6#) it just returned at least a few pounds to the bottom of the pool. My robot just filled with it for a few days as it scooped it all up off the floor.

When I opened the body up, there was huge build up between the filters. The manifold was cracked both on the stand pipe connection and also in the main body.

I replaced the manifold and stand pipe gasket, but used the same grids (they looked pretty ok once I cleaned them up a bit)--still DE dumped into pool.
I replaced the grids and still no change.
The grids and manifold were aftermarket, as I couldn't locate an OEM replacement for either. I kind of feel like they do not mate together as well as the old grids did with either the old or new manifold, but I can't get a nice picture of it--it just feels like there is extra cloth at the top of the grids kind of riding up the collar of the place where they insert into the manifold

1) should I cut that extra cloth away? Should I just return them and get different grids? Again: old grids new manifold had the same issue, so I can't eliminate that I'm just putting them together wrong, though I was very meticulous about aligning them and trying to seat the manifold evenly.
2) is there another place in this system where it is likely the de is getting through?
3) The whole thing is weird because there is NO room at the top for the air bleeder--look how it got squashed down! This is not a matter of adjusting--the location of the stand pipe is such that there is no way to get the manifold any lower, which means the clearance is just not there for, well, anything. It's just really odd.
I ended up ordering a pentair quad DE filter that arrived damaged, so I'm hassling with that, and while I am, I'm thinking: "maybe I should just ASK before I commit to installing a 2,000 dollar (with the multi port) filter that I might not even need?"
Any advice or suggestions welcome. Thank you!!
