I have an old Nautilus ns-60 DE filter that doesn't seem to keep most of the DE in it. When I would backwash and refill with about 4# of de (per local pool folks--they said do not do all 6#) it just returned at least a few pounds to the bottom of the pool. My robot just filled with it for a few days as it scooped it all up off the floor.

When I opened the body up, there was huge build up between the filters. The manifold was cracked both on the stand pipe connection and also in the main body.

I replaced the manifold and stand pipe gasket, but used the same grids (they looked pretty ok once I cleaned them up a bit)--still DE dumped into pool.

I replaced the grids and still no change.

The grids and manifold were aftermarket, as I couldn't locate an OEM replacement for either. I kind of feel like they do not mate together as well as the old grids did with either the old or new manifold, but I can't get a nice picture of it--it just feels like there is extra cloth at the top of the grids kind of riding up the collar of the place where they insert into the manifold

1) should I cut that extra cloth away? Should I just return them and get different grids? Again: old grids new manifold had the same issue, so I can't eliminate that I'm just putting them together wrong, though I was very meticulous about aligning them and trying to seat the manifold evenly.

2) is there another place in this system where it is likely the de is getting through?

3) The whole thing is weird because there is NO room at the top for the air bleeder--look how it got squashed down! This is not a matter of adjusting--the location of the stand pipe is such that there is no way to get the manifold any lower, which means the clearance is just not there for, well, anything. It's just really odd.

I ended up ordering a pentair quad DE filter that arrived damaged, so I'm hassling with that, and while I am, I'm thinking: "maybe I should just ASK before I commit to installing a 2,000 dollar (with the multi port) filter that I might not even need?"

Any advice or suggestions welcome. Thank you!!

Yeah I JUST bought the house and the previous owners… did not help in any way or tell me anything or leave me any docs. Nice.

So yeah, they had used a local pool co to maintain it and so I just called them and talked about it a bit. They are very nice and helpful, but tbh, considering they did the openings and closings, they either broke the manifold or knew it was broken and put it in anyhow.

The whole thing is a mess, and I have a separate thread on replacing everything. But considering I got shipped a filter that is damaged and that I just found out I will not get the warrantee on because I’m a DIY guy (but apparently not a “do your own research” guy, doh), I am tapping the brakes and thinking: maybe return the broken filter and try ONE more time with the old filter, just to limp through to fall. Then I can close it and research everything so I can replace in spring.

But yeah, gotta either get this thing going or commit to a new filter that I don’t have a ton of time to research.

Quick question: how long can I go with a DE filter that is known to leak half its contents into the pool. Asking for a friend.

If you can get the new damaged filter replaced, you will find that the QuadDE is a much, much better design and easier to work with than a grid style DE filter. Cleaning and replacing the 4 cartridges is simple compare to wrestling with those stupid grids.

I'd return it for replacement and not worry about warranty. There's very little that can go wrong and lots to be gained here.

Whoever sold you that filter should replace it if it was damaged in transit. That’s between the seller and the shipper/delivery company.

Thanks both. Great point on the spider gasket. We'll see how responsive the seller is. If they make it easy I'll keep the deluxe filter, but yeah maybe if they are difficult to work with and demand I return the whole thing before I get a new one or something I'll just try the gasket first...

I was thinking maybe just pay amazon for their (cheap) warrantee and that way at least I have some kind of coverage after 30 days. Dunno if anyone here has had experience with them.

I think Amazon will be happy to take your warranty money but their handling of a warranty claim on something like a filter is likely to be more trouble then it is worth.
