My pool looks like a swamp! New owner, 1st time opening, Help!

Today why don't you dump 1/2 gallon in the morning and another 1/2 gallon around 3pm and 1/2 gallon at bed time. Dont do every 2 hours today. We just don't want you going too high since you cannot test right now. We don't want to to fade your liner. If you are high on your FC and stay high for too long that could happen.

Very prudent advice. Not nearly the risk in a plaster pool, so it's best not to push your luck with vinyl, even if it slows down the SLAM.

If feel like I'm not making any progress with not being able to test and knowing how much to put in. The pool looks the same as yesterday.

Besides fading the liner, does it hurt the SLAM, if I'm putting in too much chlorine? I'm completely out again, have to go buy more chlorine this morning. I've used 28 Gals. of chlorine to this point.. Wondering how much more it's gonna take! Feel like I'm spinning my wheels at this point.

Fading the liner is the big one with too much FC. I don't know if it could harm anything else. It does take a lot of chlorine to clear a pool. All you can do is follow what we recommended, keep brushing, backwashing filter as needed. We just don't want you to have a sparking pool in the end with a faded liner.

All SLAM vary as to how long it takes and how much chlorine used.

It often feels like it but you are making progress. It's just when you start with one this bad, it takes a big push to get over the mountain. More will never hurt the SLAM, but going too high with FC does put your liner at risk for fading. Not with what we suggest, but about 50 FC is where it gets really dicey. The only down side to the K2006 is that it just doesn't have enough reagent for testing FC frequently during a clearing of Algae. I know it's frustrating, but I promise if you stick with it, the pool will come your way and clear up. It's just hard when they start like this. Many have been done this bad or worse. When did you get the order in for refills?

I ordered Friday, tracking shows its in Indy, I should have it tomorrow. Thanks for the encouragement!
I haven't vacuumed yet because I can't see the bottom, should I go ahead and try?

First, scoop everything you can out of the pool with a leaf rake. This will make the SLAM go faster and use less chlorine. Then brush the sides and floor to dislodge the algae and then vacuum, this will expose the algae to the chlorine more and kill it faster.

Just know that it will look like you have gone backwards because the brushing will put more stuff into the water. That is a good thing! Get off of the walls and bottom into the water where the bleach can work on killing it!

You are doing a wonderful job! Just keep listening to Lisa. She has been there, done that! Just look at her pool and how nice it looks now!

I've scooped all I can find on the bottom scraped the walls and bottom yesterday. I'll scrape the bottom again today.

So.. while we were out running errands, I stopped at a pool store... Picked up 12 Gals. of 12.5% Chlorine... Against your advice I had them test the water just for fun.. I didn't get a print out but
he told me FC was 0 and there was some CC. I explained to him what the pool originally looked and how it is now, and doing this process following these methods.
His suggestion was to put all 12 Gals. of Chlorine in at one time to "shock" the pool, and stir up any algae.

What is the difference in doing it by trying to maintain a shock level of 16, and dumping all at once and shocking it? I'm not reverting to their methods, just trying to understand the process better.

Thanks again for all the tips.

In your pool those 12 gallons would raise your FC to 75. He doesn't care if you potentially fade your liner. We do. The shock level of 16 is safe for all equipment, and still effective at clearing up the pool. Pool stores like the shotgun approach. We like the precision of a scalpel.

LikeN240sxguy said. Don't do it! You could potentially ruin your liner. During my SLAM I chose to go over the recommended SLAM levels. That was a choice I made myself. I would never go that high though. I only went the next level up. Keep in mind mustard algae shock level is not even that high. If you choose to SLAM above your SLAM shock levels that is your choice it is your pool. You will be the only one to blame if something should happen.

Lisa,
I'm not going to, I was just wanting to know the difference in doing it all at once as opposed to trying to maintain a shock level. I trust you guys and what your telling me. My reagent is hopefully going to be here tomorrow so I can test and get back on track. I did go scrub the walls and bottom about an hour ago, and at this point, no algae or anything floating.

Also, I've been keeping any eye of my filter pressure. It's running at 15psi. and hardly going up even after 24hrs. The first 2 days it did go up but after several hours and would hit around 25psi. It ran over 36 hrs. yesterday and today without going up at all. Does that seem ok?

Thanks!
Tim

Good. Thanks for trusting us.

Yes, once a majority of stuff is out of the pool you will have more time between having to backwash. I remember when I was so excited I did not have to backwash for 3 days...lol

Have you tried vacuuming yet?

Not yet, I'm installing shower doors right now, in between trips to Home Depot for missing parts out of the box!!! My water looks more green today than yesterday. So far, I've only put a total of 2 Gals. of 12.5% chlorine in for the day.
