Reviving an old thread. Yes, it was in fact mustard algae. I can only seem to get it under control where it's not a problem during the pool season.
The issue is mustard algae can live on anything! Clothes, stairs, pool toys, floaties, e.t.c. As soon as I feel it's gone I start seeing 1/4 inch forming in a few days, and that's all it needs to take off. It's very persistent.
