Hello, I am currently battling a mustard algae problem. My cya was very high 160’s at our opening in may. We started seeing a dirt/sand like substance on the seams of our vinyl liner and was instructed to treat with bioguard algicide (which we did and did not work). We recently partially drained and refilled our pool and now have our cya reading between 45-50. Prior to starting slam our levels were the following: ph 7.2-7.3, fc-8, cc-0.5, alk 180, cya 50( i think it was closer to 45 but decided to go with the higher #). We started 6/14 and are currently still doing the slam process as we have not been able to pass over night free chlorine test although we came close. We have been keeping our FC around 20-25 (just in case the cya is a little higher than what I seen it at) for the normal shock before the mustard level shock. We are now going on 6/22 and still have passed the loss test. We brush 2x a day and vacuum at least once a day. We have been cleaning our de filter every 3-4days as we don’t have the option to back wash with our pump. I’m not really sure where to go from here. If we are getting combined Chlorine throughout the day when we are checking FC do we need to increase the shock level to break that? Also how long can we safely continue with the high chlorine level? We are also seeing quite a few boatmen bugs in our pool and don’t know how to get rid of them. In advance would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

Did you mean to say "have not" passed the Overnight Chlorine Loss Test? Your signature is blank, so you should update your signature with all of your pool details. See mine as an example. During this regular SLAM Process, have you examined behind any lights (in the niche), removed the drain cover, and removed any steps or ladders is able to do so? Any other potential hiding areas for algae in your pool?

Sorry you are correct. We have not passed OCLT. Our stairs and ladder are built in and I have brushed really well on and around them. As for the lights, I have brushed really on and around them. I didn’t unscrew the plate that covers them because I was afraid I would ruin them. The drains in the deep I’m im not sure how to get off. I don’t believe we have any other place for the algae to hide.
