Muriatic acid or dry acid tablets?

Hi there! I know muriatic acid (liquid) is recommended over dry acid because you don’t want sulphites to build up in the pool.

But if I’m just using it to clean my cartridge filters as outlined in the wiki, would dry acid work just as well? Because I would rinse the filter before it comes into contact with the pool water?

I’m not bothered either way, I just thought dry acid tabs might be a little safer/easier to store if it is an option. Thanks!

Most people seem to be able to just rinse off the filters and put them back. No need for acid. There’s a specific mild filter cleaners you can try if not.

You already have muriatic acid for the pool, just use it if necessary. No need to have a separate chemical to store.

As I recal, you have to clean the filters first, soak in a filter cleaner, TSP or powdered dishwashing detergent - and then soak in diluted muriatic acid if absolutely necessary. Why do you want to soak the catridges in diluted acid?

Don't use acid to clean a filter cartridge without first cleaning with a degreaser like TSP. If there is any grease on the filter, acid will solidify it, quite possibly damaging the cartridge.

Actually I don’t have muriatic acid for the pool. Like I said I would only be using it for cleaning the filter. As described here.

I have a really tiny pool with really tiny filters. They get dirty very quickly.

I know all the information you guys are giving me, I’m just wondering if dry acid would work just as well?

Um, that article doesn’t answer my question? I also mentioned in my post that I’ve already read it. I will use TSP first. I’m asking if I can use dry acid to clean them or if it needs liquid acid instead.

You should take all the same precautions storing dry acid as muriatic acid.

Making a 1:20 acid solution with dry acid will be fine.

How will you figure out how much dry acid to use?

Thank you very much for your response. I really appreciate it.

It’s nice to know I won’t have to worry about the sulphite issue.

Well, if I use the PoolMath ‘effect of adding’ it says adding 50ml of 31% MA to 1L of water decreases pH and TA a certain level and if I put in 65g of dry acid it’s roughly the same levels.

It’s not a perfect way to calculate, so I’m definitely open to suggestions. I’m also not set on dry over wet. I just wondered if it was an option considering my use case.

I’m autistic and compulsively plan before I execute an idea. So thank you for your help. I just know my filters got stained with iron ore dust after a few days last time I gave the pool a go.
