Got a small whiff of the muriatic acid tonight. Let me say, you do not want to breathe the stuff. My fault. But let me say, if you stay upwind, it won't happen. And if you are side-winds like me, a small whiff is all you will get, if you remember to hold your breath. And the outdoor vapors were less acidic (to my nose) than pickling vegetables vietnamese style with vinegar and sugar indoors, or chopping onions in the kitchen.

Point is, the wet acid is much better than the dry acid. The dry acid has its disadvantages, you can look it up on this forum.

And remember, use eye protection when adding muriatic acid !! Not eye friendly at all.

Remember also that no matter what safety equipment you wear to still take the precaution of standing upwind, breathing slowly through your nose and pouring carefully. We have seen before someone wearing an apron, gloves, eye protection and mask but still managed to burn his throat slightly. Meanwhile several of us who just grab the stuff in our street clothes have never gotten more than a slight nose or eye irritation.

The moral isn't that protective equipment isn't a good idea but that it is in addition to, not a substitute for, good safety practice.

Yeah, I always stand upwind of this stuff. I also dilute it in a bucket of pool water before adding to the deep end of the pool in front of a return.

When the chlorine is high in the pool water, the MA does have a pronounced reaction and releases a vapor. The wind changed on me one day as I was pouring and I got a whiff of that vapor (Wow! to say the least).

Since having our pool re-surfaced, I have had a lot of practice adding MA. Now that we're 30 days out, it has been less often. I remember the first day I added a whole gallon of MA to bring the pH down.
