Motor overheating, shutting off

The motor was made July 22 2021, which was exactly 3 years as of yesterday.

It has a 2 year warranty from the date of manufacturing or a 1 year warranty from the date of installation.

Most likely the impeller is too big.

Can you verify the impeller model number by looking on the impeller for the part number?

It’s so strange. Every morning I have been getting up and backwashing. 3 times. Back wash 60 seconds, rinse 30 seconds. Do it 3 times consecutively. Then start pump with return valve all the way open. Sometimes it runs open 2 hours or so before it gets hot and shuts down. Other times an hour. Today it has been 6 1/2 hours and it’s still running. Motor is not as hot to the touch. I’ve had the same impeller 15 years, and same size motor. Impeller turns freely when I spin it by hand. I’m thinking maybe all the brushing pool, backwashing mornings, and cleaning filter may be getting the gunk out. I can check impeller size, but don’t wanna shut I’d down right now. If it shuts down again, I will.

The max load amps is 10.6.

Maybe an oversized impeller or maybe the voltage is dropping out.

Check voltage under load at the motor terminals.
James. I have never checked a motor under loan at terminals. Could you explain the process of how to do this? When you say under load, do you mean with motor running? Thank you

My nephew is head of maintainance at a local college here in town. Has electrician license. He checked at terminals under load. It is good. I’m thinking impeller now. It ran 7 hours today with pressure side valve open all the way. Like I said earlier sometimes it’ll run an hour sometimes two or three sometimes up to seven or eight hours. I just don’t understand it. I think impeller is my last option.

But if I shut the valve just a little bit I still have pretty good jet, flow and circulation. The pump does not get hot and shut off.
So strange. Shutting the valves a little bit makes my pressure go up. when it is open. My pressure is normal at about 17 to 20. When Val was closed, a little bit pressure is 23 to 24 and motor does not shut off. Runs all day.

More restriction reduces the flow and that reduces the amperage.

Check the impeller.

You can reduce the impeller as long as you still get enough flow for the heater.

Or, you will need a bigger motor.

Ok thanks. I still have enough flow with valve shut a little to run heater. I will check impeller when I get time and let you know model. Appreciate your help a lot. 👍
