Hi all,

I noticed a metal wire attached to the pump with the end laying on top of the ground (pics attached). Is the end supposed to be attached to anything? Also, what is its purpose?

We've been here a couple of months, and I'm not yet familiar with the mechanical parts of our pool. Also, I noticed this wire is being bumped into when the gardener comes each week. I don't know if I should be doing something to protect the wire.

Thanks for the help!

That’s a bonding wire. Find out where is used to be connected. It probably travels underground and connects to the pool decking and the rebar in the gunite.

Copper lugs and split bolts are used to connect the bonding wires together into one loop.

Thank you! This is probably a silly question, but would I contact a pool store or pool service company to help me understand where the wire used to be connected? (As you can tell, I'm very new to pools. lol)

Also, do you think the wire is okay like it is, or should I try to move it out of the way until I know where it's supposed to go?

I appreciate the help!

Many times you’ll find that the bonding wire at your equipment pad will emerge from the soil/gravel in and or around where your supply/return plumbing is located. The easiest path from your pool is the trench that the PB dug for your plumbing so they lay the bond wire in the trench before covering it over. You might take a hand shovel and carefully dig around where the PVC emerges from the ground and you may find the other end of the bond wire. Once you find it, use one of the bonding lugs pictured above to join the ends and then bury as much of the exposed wire to keep it from being disturbed once again.

Can also use a metal detector around the area to try and find it. Maybe the gardener weed-wacked it and cut it. OP should definitely try and fix it as it can be a safety issue.
