Hi,
1st post here, but looking for advise! Have a 23,000 gallon vinyl pool with SWG. A couple of years ago started getting some metal staining. Used stain free from nature’s chemical and got great results although some cloudiness at times. This year was no exception. Pool opened and within a week metal stains were back. Went to 2 local pool stores each giving different readings and advise. Used the stain free again looked gorgeous after a few days of cloudiness. Went away for a few days and came back to greenish water with stains back. Added some Algaecide based on another recommendation and waited 24 hours no change. Went to the company that installed the pool and they tested for me.
Total chlorine- 0.0
Free chlorine -0.0
PH- 7.8
Total alkalinity- 113
Calcium hardiness- 0
Stabilizer- 5
Copper - 4.0
Iron - 1.4
Salt- 2100
Phosphate- 2000
They advised me to clean my filter, add 1 qt to start of Omega iron out formula 11 and then use the stain free that I already had. I did this and the pool looked gorgeous again. They told me to come back for testing prior to adding a chlorine back in to recheck for metals. 3 days later I did here were my readings.
Total chlorine- 1.0
Free chlorine - .2
PH - 7.5
Total alkalinity- 157
Calcium hardness- 177
Stabilizer- 35
Copper - .4
Iron-0
Salt - 2103
Phosphate- 806

They suggested 2 qts Omega Iron Out Formula 11 then 2 gallons 38 oz liquid shock or 2lbs 5 oz super shock granular. I added 1 qt of the iron out and within hours pool got cloudy. Have not added any shock or anything else for fear of restraining based on past experience. Cleaned the filter and have been running it 24 hours for 2 days. Still cloudy. Want to use the pool, and desperate to clear it up HELP

Lots to discuss but lets focus on the metals in your pool. Read

You have both iron and copper. Do you know how they got into your water? Do you have a source of metal free water?

You are on a cycle of the metals moving from solution in the water where they stain to suspension in the sequesterant you add which cloud the pool and then back to solution when the sequesterant breaks down. The only permanent fix is to drain the water with copper and fill with clean water. Folks have been successful filtering out iron with polyfill.

Some algaecides are copper based. We never recommend algaecides other than Polyquat 60 be used.

The copper typically comes from chemicals that you add that contain copper. Products with "Blue" in the name are the most common ones. Many Chlorox X-way chemicals and some algaecides. At the level of copper in your water, you (or someone else) have added a lot of those products. Can you let us know which products you have used like these over the past years.

The iron typically comes in from the tap water. Do you have iron staining on any fixtures in your house?

I did use an algaecide that has copper in it. I also have a heat pump that I was told could be adding the metals. If that is the case I need to figure out how to keep the metals sequestered I guess. But I still can’t figure out the cloudiness.
