We have a 30 gallon acid feeder on a 20,000 gallon indoor pool. We are doing some modifications to our pool equipment and plan to use the acid feeder to feed both the indoor and outdoor pool. I have been adding 1 gallon of 31.45% MA to the 30 gallon tank and it lasts about 2 weeks before I need to refill. Obviously, we will go through the acid faster if it is also feeding the outdoor pool. What is the maximum concentration of acid that I could put in that 30 gallon acid feeder tank? Could I put 2 or 3 gallons of 31.45% MA in that 30 gallon tank? Any risk of damage to equipment by increasing the acid concentration?

Just to be clear, you have been mixing 1 gallon of 31% acid with 29 gallons of water? That is a very weak acid solution?

I don't use an acid feeder but from what I have read here people dilute their acid feeder 1:1 to dilute the 31% acid by 50%. Primarily so that if the acid feeder goes haywire and pumps the entire tank into the pool it will not take the pH too low.

What we don't know is where the acid is injected in your plumbing system to comment about its effects on equipment.

I don't dilute my Stenner pump at all. It's pure 31.45% MA. Some others that dose acid don't mix either, and others do. That being said, I know I'll probably have to replace a couple components on a yearly basis (which I think is recommended by Stenner if you run MA through it), but I'm not worried much about that as it's pretty minor doing so.

I will take a closer look at this to see if I can tell you where the acid is being injected. (I'm assuming it is somewhere on the return line after the filter and heater, but I'll double check.)

Also, FWIW, with my MA dosing, I make sure it's the LAST thing before the returns. It's after: the pump, the filter, the heater, and the 2 SWGs, then finally comes the doser feed, then the returns.
