Max Free Chlorine for pool heater?

I have a RayPack 156A coming that i'm going to be installing this year. Reading the manual, I see it says ideal free Chlorine is about 2-3ppm, with 5ppm being the MAX, as in, it will damage the copper heat exchanger over that.

I regularly try to keep my pool around 4ppm, but often will target 5ppm when I add chemicals. Anyone have any feedback on that? It does appear that it's dead simple to change the heat exchanger, I wonder what their average lifespan is.

Would greatly appreciate any feedback on this. Thanks!

Ignore the manufacturer’s recommendation. As odd as that sounds, it’s true. With CYA in the water, the amount of active chlorine is very low. Keep pH in the 7’s and the heat exchanger will be perfectly fine.

Low pH is the enemy of heaters, not the amount of chlorine..

Keep in mind that your drinking water can have up to 4 ppm of FC and this is without any CYA.
