Hello there - We picked a marble coping and they installed it, however i asked them if they round out the edges or at least take the sharpness out and the contractor told me its standard to just leave the marble as is. I am worried its too sharp and can be dangerous with kids playing. They then told me it would cost $150 to have the team sand the edges. Does this seem right to you? good idea or bad idea? I am especially worried about that corner.....

Any help is appreciated!!

I have corners like that and it has never been a problem. Once water is in the pool there is little reason anyone will come up against that corner.

How deep is the pool by that corner?

I believe 150$ is well invested if you feel that the marble is not "smooth" enough to get out of the pool from the side without scraping your legs or to site comfortably on the side. But I would not really sand it down to be visibly round because you will loose the nice square aspect and you can not really do much with the corner.

My concrete cantilever edge was lightly diamond sanded just the be more comfortable and avoid scratching my-self.

I agree $150 is nothing. Sounds like they would do a once around of a hand sanding which will take their crew an hour or tw and they are passing along the costs. I also wouldn’t expect this sanding to do much beyond take away a minimum of material. Itll still be an edge but maybe with a little less bite.

The corner is the only thing I’d potentially worry about. Another option is to go get a masonry grinding disc for $20 at Home Depot and put it on an angle grinder to save yourself some money, or ask if they can just round off that corner a tad.

We had raw brick as coping around our pool as a kid. Never thought about it being sharp.

I think what you want is called eased edge. It’s not sharp.

Edit: I had discussion with pb about wanting straight but worried about sharpness and he said the straight coping comes already eased edge. So I’d make sure it isn’t already eased by the manufacturer.

I’d never heard the term before. Had a friend getting a pool check out the eased edge because she also thought straight would be sharp and she really liked it.

My bluestone coping had a sharp 90 edge. I too wanted something less than that. I eased it with a grinder. I put a 45 degree edge on it which is about 1/8" wide or maybe a shade more. This picture isn't real close up but you can see the reflection off of the beveled section. I also had some small table tops that had corners on them, like you coping. I hit the corner to take off the sharpness in addition to the long edges. Just a little, but it worked well for me.
