Lately and most summers, it's rainwater.

Rainwater is typically low pH and zero TA/CH.

Watch your CSI, keep it slightly negative. Letting CH go to 250 and keeping ph around 7.8 should do the trick.

I've never had to do it, so I just want to learn it properly.

Manage your pH, keep it around 7.8. As you reduce pH from 8.0 to 7.8, TA will come down.

You don't need to do anything special to lower your TA.
And a TA of 70 in your location is perfectly fine, given you usually use rain water for refill.
Just lower the pH to keep CSI slightly negative - in the 0.00 to -0.30 range.
