main drain cover needs to be put back in

Hi folks,

This is my second year opening up pool by myself, and I noticed the main drain cover is loosen on the pool bottom when I opened the pool cover today.

So I have two questions here

1:Will it be safe to drain most of the water out of the pool so I can access the main drain? (I am using a pool cover submersible pump to slowly pump out water now )

2:The screws for the main drain cover, is that something special or as long as it is stainless steel and fits will be okay?
