Lowering pH

Yesterday pH testing came to 8.0 on testing window. I added 31 oz of muriatic acid to bring pH to 7.4. (Was shooting a little higher than I wanted, 7.2, so pH didn’t drop too low and I could fine tune it today to 7.2.) This morning I checked pH and it read 7.8. I do have a water slide that we keep running. Could the aeration from the water falling in the pool off the slide cause the pH to rise or was it likely that my pH was higher than 8.0 yesterday morning and the muriatic acid just brought it to 7.8?

Aeration is nature's natural pH increaser. I would definitely turn-off any sources of aeration not needed while in or at the pool. Also check your TA. If your TA is too high, it will also allow the pH to rise very quickly. If you're not sure, let us know what your TA is as well.

7.8 is fine. You don't need to be at 7.2 I would shoot for 7.5ish and let it drift on its own. What are the rest of your numbers? What is total alkalinity? It was probably a combination of your pH was higher than you thought and the aeration from the slide.

Test results are from 5/17
FC 8.5 (this morning’s was 8)
CC 0
pH 8.0 (this morning’s 7.8)
TA 120
CH 140
CYA 60

Any good recommendations on protective masks and/or gloves? I bought what Lowe’s had displayed in the same area when I bought the muriatic acid. After catching a whiff of the muriatic acid this morning it is obvious I need to invest in a better mask, especially since pH may be a reoccurring problem for me.

Although it isn’t recommended here because some one got burnt I use the 3M 4277 as the fumes are pretty noxious, they are reusable

It has a strong odor. Most regular users pour from the upwind side and use no gloves or mask. Be cautious and smart. Do what you feel is good practice for you. I’ve never felt the need to use protective gear.

Pouring it close to the water surface limits vapors as well. Less time exposed to the air.

I thought I had read about people pouring out of the bottle close to the water. My question with that, though, is how do they know for sure how much they are pouring in?

If you want to put an exact amount of Muriatic acid you'll need to get a plastic measuring cup to measure the amount you put in. I just guestimate in fact I just put in "around" a pint.
