I checked my pool on monday. My PH was 7.8. I didn't personally check the alkalinity. But the pool builder said it was 100. I added muratic acid to lower my PH to 7.0-7.2 per the pool math calculator. I checked again today, PH was right on target at 7.0, but my alkalinity was at 110. I did make the mistake of not turning my pump when adding my acid. Did this cause my alkalinity to not drop? What am I missing here. Why did my alkalinity level not drop to 70-80 range?

String........ disregard anything the PB tests. Unless he took a sample to the shop and used the questionable machine, it was a test strip. Either way, trust yourself.

Each round of PH drop / aerate back up lowers the TA 10. You lowered but didn't raise it yet. A 110 can be fine. A 100 is totally fine and will settle on its own as you manage the PH.

You should always slowly pour acid (pencil stream) in front of a return with the pump running.

Always check it yourself with a proper test kit. How are you testing? Fill out your signature when you have a moment.

But the pool builder said it was 100.
How is he testing? Many builders are clueless regarding pool chemistry.

Did this cause my alkalinity to not drop?
No.

g4,

Reducing your TA is a process over time, not a onetime deal.

TA is the last thing that I even think about as long as my pH is somewhat stable.

Thanks,
