Low PH with high alkalinity

Why are you needing to reduce the TA? Also, pH will rise naturally with a high TA.

I just encountered the same issue. Ph of 7.2 with TA of 140. The pool math tells me I should reduce TA. Is this unnecessary?

TA is not a critical parameter, depending on various factors. If your pH is 7.2 with that TA, the pH will rise, fairly rapidly.
When the pH rises to 8, lower it to 7.2. That will consume some TA. As the TA lowers, the pH will rise less fast.
