Loud noise diagnosis help needed: Pentair IntelliFlo VSF

Thanks James. I drew a red line in parallel with what I’m guessing is my bond wire is. It ran by the pump but wasn’t connected (maybe it fell off some time after install idk)16DACFD7-4567-4A1B-9D28-F163B37DD41D.jpeg

If you have a dremel rotary tool, you can use this abrasive buffs or a SS wire brush attachment to fully clear the shaft for the new bearing. Also use some penetrating oil a few hours before the extractor.

Thank you. I do have the tool and will use it for clean up. Good idea.

Got the bearings off today, front bearing doesn’t spin without considerable force and back bearing is not too bad. Replacements match in size so that’s good. I should get the gasket set tomorrow and plan to start painting soon in prep for the assembly.

Ok. Cleaned it up with the dremmel and got a couple layers of outdoor paint on it. Will start assembly tomorrow (which I fear may be the hardest part). 🤞🏼

I'm seeing this thread too late to make a difference, but will point it out anyway.

Another thing to check when there's corrosion is that the threaded inserts in the seal plate are still solid. That aluminum+water reaction does something to the plastic. I had a Pentaire pump (older Whisperflow, but it has the same arrangement) where most of the inserts spun when I loosened the bolts. One broke out completely. Had to replace the plate. Others were just wiggling. I was not applying much torque.

In the photos it looks like yours are basically okay, but next time you have the pump open, give a check.

Good luck with it!

The journey continues. Got it assembled and wired up. Bad news is I have a steady leak (pic with red arrow) I need to figure out. Good news is the pump sounds normal (at least to my ears). Equipment is on a hill so I haven’t primed it yet to hear how it runs pushing water but I think the bearings helped. Now to figure out if I can solve the leak.

I have two issues. At least one I think is doa.
1. The seal plate threads are stripped / compromised and I can’t get a good torque. I’ll have to order a new one. ~$100
2. The front motor assembly looks to have a stripped thread on the right side. I just could not get it seated flush. I don’t think this is related to the water leak. And given the motor spins / sounds ok thus far maybe it’s ok for now. Replacing that might vary we’ll need a whole new dry motor?

Either way. After the seal play I’m in an out $200 bucks on this project. Sigh.
