Losing Water over winter- Mesh cover and pump problem or something worse?

Hey everybody, first time posting here. I have a 24 foot x 12 foot x 4 foot oval above ground pool and a mesh winter cover I use during the year. I am very late to opening my pool but began this week and noticed the water level is very low. I'd say about a foot to a foot and a half lower than it should be. I have throughout the spring, pumped water off the pool cover. The pump I use is a pretty big one probably weighs around 10-15lbs. My question is, have I been pumping pool water out of the pool since I have a mesh cover and I've just been a little dumb, or is it something worse like a tear in the liner. I haven't noticed any squishy ground around the pool at all and the liner is only a few years old. We did a solid job of keeping the cover on fully all year so there's not much debris in the water under the cover so I feel as if it's not a liner problem but a pumping problem.

Also, Any tips on how to open the pool and get the cover off without all the dead leaves on top of the mesh cover from falling in? Each year we have a problem with this.

Sorry for the ramble, just a bit nervous about all of this! I am currently filling the pool up again to begin the opening process and to be able to pull the mesh winter cover off easily.

Thanks so much for all your help!

It's possible. Happens quite often actually. Hopefully that's all it is and not a tear in the liner. I'll post a couple article below to help for future reference. Welcome to TFP!
