Looking to get a variable speed pump. What is the correct size?

A couple years ago, I purchased a new motor for my century centurion motor. Unfortunately, about a month after the warranty ended, it went bad. I was thinking of just replacing the entire pump with a variable speed, but I don't really know what to get. I was thinking of just getting a Pentair EC-342001. But I'm not sure if that's the appropriate size.

The current motor is a Century Centurion B128, 1.4 HP. The filter is a Hayward S210S sand filter. A few years ago, someone servicing my pool told me that the pump was too big for the filter (or the filter too small for the pump). I have noticed that without adding DE to my sand filter, it doesn't do a great job of filtering. So maybe they were right.

A few details regarding my setup:
  • Inground pool, vinyl
  • Pool is small, only 15x30 and 12k gallons.
  • 1 main drain, 1 skimmer, 1 return.
  • Pool equipment is really close to the pool. Only about 3 feet away and not up a hill or anything.
    • ~6' from beginning of skimmer.
    • ~15' from main drain and drain is about 6' deep.
    • Return is really short, only ~3'
Thanks!
